1. Attribution for the Above/Below the Line Practice: The concept traces back to Robert Kiyosaki (pre-Rich Dad, Poor Dad). Carolyn Taylor writes about learning it from him in her 2005 book, Walking the Talk. In their 2015 book, The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership, Jim Dethmer, Diana Chapman, and Kaley Warner Klemp advanced the concept by adding Karpman's Drama Triangle and Emerald's Empowerment Dynamic. Full attribution is actually attached to the image in the Strong Ground chapter where I write about this powerful practice. I put the image in a comment below for you to grab if you're interested. 2. Kara Swisher: Thank you! Always fun, you big mushy ball of love and vulnerability! 3. Listen to the podcast on Apple: https://lnkd.in/gtTnrB4b 4. I had so much fun with Daniel Pink at Sixth & I last night. He asked me great questions about "Strong Ground" and we both laughed pretty much all night! What a great group of folks ❤️. Dan asked me to tell the St. Jude's story that's in the chapter titled, "Mission Critical? Mission Clarity!" Here's a short excerpt. I still cry when I think about this experience and the sense of pride and purpose that filled the hospital halls. From Strong Ground [Excerpt]: In 2011, I traveled to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Even though this was more than a decade ago, I’ll never forget what they taught me. Their mission today is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for catastrophic pediatric diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of their founder, Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion, or a family’s ability to pay. In 2008, they were designated a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only one devoted solely to children at the time, and their primary focus was on pediatric cancer. When I got to the hospital, I jumped on the elevator, and it was just me and a woman in her sixties who was wearing a uniform and a hairnet. She was pushing a double-decker cart of desserts wrapped in protective paper. I said, “Wow! Those look delicious. What do you do here at St. Jude?” She looked at me and without hesitation, she said, “I cure cancer.” She said it with such conviction that I knew it was true. I think my face conveyed emotion more than anything. She said, “Patients, families, doctors, nurses—people need to eat. What we do is hard work.” I introduced myself and told her it was great to meet her and that I appreciated her candor about the difficulty of curing cancer. She got off at the next elevator stop and I did some deep breathing. When I got off on my floor, a volunteer from the hospital met me. We chatted for a minute before I asked her how long she’d been volunteering for St. Jude. Her answer? “I’ve been curing cancer for two years now.” What’s mission critical? Mission clarity. Why? Because when leaders are disciplined in their approach to helping us understand how our work is connected to bigger strategies, and why our contributions transcend the tasks that are right in front of us—we feel braver and bolder. We have a stronger sense of agency. We are strong enough to leverage the tensions of paradox to make stronger contributions and more meaning. [End of excerpt] I'd love to know your thoughts!

Adam Grant and I launched our new podcast at SXSW this afternoon and it’s already more fun than we could imagine. We got right to disagreeing, productive challenging, and agreeing that getting it right is way more important than being right. Launch day is Thursday, March 19th! Would love to hear some topics you'd like us to discuss! And, you can download episodes wherever you listen to podcasts and follow us at @thecuriosityshop on YouTube.

I'm a big fan of most paradoxes because they're honest. Right now, I'm thinking a lot about: 1. Freedom and discipline. 2. The "grace paradox" from Father Richard Rohr (our mistakes produce the most spiritual growth) 3. James March's leadership paradox: Leadership is plumbing and poetry! Your favorite paradox (or even most challenging)?

In a world that rewards hot takes and quick wins, the pre-mortem (developed by Gary Klein) can feel like slow, uncomfortable work. When I lead these with teams, the friction usually comes from starting with very divergent ideas and the fear of killing enthusiasm in the room. The process is both brave and vulnerable. And I’ve never had a single team regret the time investment. Daring teams train to see around corners—and that’s pure mindset and skillset work. You can hear Adam and I do our own pre-mortem in episode 2 of the pod. It got real very fast. If you’ve listened to Episode 1 or 2 of The Curiosity Shop, Adam Grant and I would love your questions about anything we covered—we’re piloting a Q+A episode and want to start with what’s most helpful to you. If you want to go deeper on discussion - you can download the pod wherever you listen to your podcasts or watch on YouTube! When I want to dig into the research behind pre-mortems, I go back to Gary Klein’s classic HBR piece, “Performing a Project Premortem” (2007).

We are celebrating the Strong Ground book launch with an 8-part Dare to Lead podcast series. Across six episodes, Adam Grant and I are walking listeners through new research on what it means to be bold in the midst of unrelenting instability and complexity. We’re agreeing, disagreeing, learning, and rethinking. It was an absolute blast and I can’t wait to share it with you. I'm going to wrap up the season with two AMA's based on questions from our LinkedIn community - just leave the questions in the comment section. The first episode is out now, and the series runs through early November. You can download the episodes anywhere you listen to podcasts. Let's go!

In the second episode of a special "Dare to Lead" series with Adam Grant, we talk about how the biggest unspoken resistance to intentionality is time. It's not that we don't have time, it's that we devalue our future time by putting off what we need to do right now. Listen wherever you find your podcasts. New podcast episode drops today! Adam Grant and I talk about the dangers of narcissistic leadership and how, through a vulnerability lens, these behaviors are often driven by the shame-based fear of being or appearing ordinary. We also dive into the research on why this extremely high level of ego fragility can lead to unpredictable behaviors that drive fear, anxiety, and exhaustion in teams (and citizens). The episode was filmed and recorded at SXSW last month, and the audience was amazing! You can download the episode wherever you listen to podcasts!

A huge thank you to this community for supporting Strong Ground, for engaging in meaningful debate about what it means to lead in this difficult time, and for being thoughtful with your intentions and words in the comments. I'm thinking about doing a read-along series starting in January. We can go through the book together and learn in community (which is always the best environment when the work is relational). I took a poll in the newsletter I sent earlier this week and people like the idea of LinkedIn. Let me know what you think in the comments! Yes, no, and where! And, the last time we did a read-along, we had a lot of work teams do it together - it was so fun! Happy holidays! Stay awkward, brave and kind. It matters now more than ever. 🧡

Huge thanks to these great teachers, scholars, and thinkers! Their work challenges me in the best ways possible. Each of them contributed a chapter to the new book and I'm so grateful. When I'm rooting into my confidence or using the ground to push myself further and higher, these folks are my strong ground crew. They may not be standing next to me, but their work has shaped my thinking and pierced my heart! If there's a teacher, coach, mentor, or thinker you'd like to thank, tag them below! It takes all of us. We don't have to do it alone — we were never meant to! Aiko Bethea, Esq., PCC (she-her) Virginia "Ginny" Clarke Adam Grant Sarah Lewis Daniel Pink Abby Wambach Amy Webb

It's "Strong Ground" launch day! To celebrate, we're releasing a special ”Dare to Lead” episode where I share one of my favorite chapters from the ”Strong Ground” audiobook called ”Lock-In and Lock-Through Power.” In this chapter, I use the metaphor of a boat lock to explore the tricky work-to-home and professional-to-personal transitions that we have to navigate with our partners, children, and friends. We dig into why, at the end of a hard day of locking in, when we finally arrive home, we stay in our cars and scroll through TikTok rather than going inside, and how an intentional "locking through" process allows us to rise or lower to a new and different rhythm as we make daily transitions. And, after visiting the Teddington Lock in London and getting a lesson from Gemma, the Lead Lock and Weir Keeper, I learn why moving too fast through these transitions often results in relational capsizing. Listen to the episode: https://lnkd.in/gut77JsW And, yes. That's Aiko Bethea, Esq., PCC (she-her) and the chapter on her new framework on how to create values-anchored and accountable cultures!

One of the greatest joys of my career has been working with the amazing people at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, including taking a large team of astronauts through the Dare to Lead program (top pic). Such a privilege! I am cheering on Artemis II today and grateful for the thousands of people who have worked tirelessly to make this happen (including my dear friend, sister water polo mom, and aeronautical engineer, QJ)! God speed!  Photo credit: NASA astronaut Jessica Meir took the photo of an Artemis program patch floating in the International Space Station’s cupola.

1. Huge thanks to Lulu Garcia-Navarro. I’m not great at interviews. Try as I might, I’m not good at staying on message and I can sometimes find myself experiencing significant vulnerability hangovers the day after the interview. I’m in my “Being real is worth the hangover” era, but I can still get super anxious. Lulu’s questions were tough, fair, and insightful. As a podcaster, I was impressed by her preparedness and the thoughtful way she pressed for deeper answers. 2. The photo illustration was by the New York Times, and the actual photo is by Wynn Myers. I’m grateful to Wynn for making me feel comfortable. I’m not a fan of the photoshoot. 3. Headlines are rarely written by journalists and are almost always written to get clicks. I’m not crazy about this one only because I never wanted to be anyone’s guru. I’m trying to find my way, and that’s a full-time job. And maybe some overtime.
