THIS WAS GOING TO BE A HAPPY VIDEO ...but hard to feel happy when chaos is once again unleashed upon the world! A few thoughts came to me as I was walking on the beach this morning in Cape Town. 1️⃣ We have to count our blessings, an enjoy every moment. We really never know how many of these are due to us in life, so we have to make the most of the good times! 2️⃣ We have to plan for disaster. It's unwelcome, but ignoring how the world is trending is not going to improve our chances. We each need a 'grab bag' for life, with the ability to change our circumstances at a moments notice 3️⃣ We have to hedge our bets and stay alert for opportunities to increase those hedges. Strategy is great, but optionality is better. We're all equally humans, we all share one planet and we should all be on one team - Team Humanity! Stay safe everyone 🙏 🌏

THIS WEEK, IN RECRUITING - ISSUE 260 "We are automating away the reps we need to learn" Incredible quote from Dr. Richard Claydon in a Brainfood Live a couple weeks ago, which has really stuck with me. With AI, we're told that its going to remove the menial, repetitive tasks, releasing us humans to do 'the higher value work' But what if the repetition was essential for acquiring the task's fundamentals? In this week's essay, I'm channelling - The Karate Kid - Josh Bersin's SuperWorkers (and who gets to be one) - The K-Shaped Society - The Cumulative Value of Incremental Gains from Sir David Brailsford CBE - The coming COBOL-isation of knowledge work - And the Necessary Rehabilitation of Child Labour... Not that triggering at all then 👍 Have a read, and let me know what you think Thanks to our friends Juicebox (cheers Vicky Liu 🧃 David Paffenholz 🧃!) for supporting this newsletter. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the 80MM Series B fundraise, including what seems to be an office / team build out in London. If you're looking for Agentic AI recruiting assistant, Juicebox might be your play. Free trial + Brainfood discount on paid... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHATS GOING ON? Three things to care about this week - State of Misconduct; ERE webinar with me, Ben Mones of FAMA and Joshua Jones - Hidden Frictions in High Volume Hiring with Eric André of Kiku - Optimising Your Recruiter Workflows with AI (real examples) with Marcel van der Meer Tony de Graaf Joey N. Johannes Sundlo Leandro Gomes da Silva and friends.

Do Candidates Really Prefer AI Interviewers? AI interviewing isn't the future - it's the now. From one-way video screens to conversational chatbots, candidates are increasingly meeting algorithms before they meet humans. But here's what nobody's asking: does a Gen Z grad feel the same way about a bot interviewer as a mid-career professional? Does a neurodivergent candidate experience relief or anxiety? Are underrepresented groups finding equity -or erasure - in automated screening? We're diving deep into the demographic divide nobody's measuring.

RECRUITERS UNITE... 1️⃣ one of my favourite events in 2️⃣ one my my favourite cities with 3️⃣ some of my favourite people. Yesterday we saw a community of recruiters, talent acquisition and HR professionals get together to create an incredible experience - educational, inspirational and motivational. Hugely entertaining too - South African's have a great sense of humour (!)🤣 - and everyone reluctantly left yesterday with as many laughs as we did ideas to implement. Brilliant event, expertly put together by the one and only Samantha-Leigh Harper ♀️ - whose humility is only matched by her guts, vision and competence. We all benefit from community, but there are also exceptional people to help make communities happen. Sam's one of those 👊🇿🇦. Recruiters, connect with Sam on LinkedIn, make sure you put Recruiters Unite 2027 into your event calendar and get attending more events.

How to Hire in South Africa in 2026 Friends, I am back in South Africa, in one of my favourite cities for one of my favourite conferences, Recruiters Unite! As has become tradition, we're going to do a Brainfood Live on the day the event, to speak to local South African recruiters and discuss the main challenges in hiring in South Africa in 2026. We hope to share knowledge between local recruiters and increase awareness for outsiders on how things roll here in the Rainbow Nation!

LINKEDIN AUTO-COMMENTS You've seen these right? They are not great. But I don't blame people for doing it LinkedIn rewards engagement, so when rewards outweigh the costs, you're going to see people automating away. With AI / Automation tools now diffusing across general population, it is inevitable that we're going to see more and more AI generated posts, comments, replies - and it's not clear how LinkedIn, or any other social network, is going to deal with it. This post isn't about lecturing people not to do it, but more so to open a discussion - hopefully with real humans - on what you think will happen to LinkedIn when AI-Gen becomes dominant here? Poll for today folks - give me your thoughts on what you think LinkedIn will do, and whether you've personally got a strategy to deal with the bots!

Sir David Brailsford OBE first popularised the idea of "cumulative value of incremental gains" Idea is simple: Small, even barely measurable improvements can, on aggregate and over time, lead to significant performance improvements The opposite is also the case. The cumulative COST of inefficiency can on aggregate, and over time, lead to degradations of performance, and eventually catastrophic failure. I'm talking about this with Eric André of Kiku tomorrow in Part 2 of our High Volume Hiring series. We'll be discussing the diagnostic process Talent Acquisition and HR leaders need to undergo in order to reveal the often hidden inefficiencies in the hiring funnel, as well as the decision making framework that moves insight into effective action. How to Hire in Japan in 2026 Japan's talent landscape is shifting fast—and foreign employers are scrambling to catch up. With accelerating demographic decline, evolving work culture norms, and new government visa reforms, 2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for recruitment in the world's third-largest economy. The old playbook - post on Daijob, hire a bilingual coordinator, hope for the best - isn't just outdated. It's expensive. Whether you're scaling your Japan presence or hiring remotely from abroad, you need intel that matches the market's velocity.

Human Judgement vs AI Recommendation AI is now embedded across sourcing, screening, matching, and interview scheduling. Yet one phrase keeps appearing in every vendor pitch and compliance policy: human-in-the-loop. But what does that actually mean in practice? In this livestream, “Human Judgement vs AI Recommendation – What does it really mean to say ‘human-in-the-loop’?”, we’ll examine how decisions are truly being made inside AI-enabled hiring workflows. When the algorithm scores, ranks, and recommends, where does human authority begin — and end?

How to Hire in Korea in 2026 How to Hire in Korea in 2026 Korea's talent market is at an inflection point. With the world's lowest birth rate, a fiercely competitive corporate culture, and a government aggressively courting foreign investment, 2026 presents both unprecedented hiring challenges and massive opportunities. The Seoul-centric, degree-obsessed, seniority-driven playbook is crumbling. A new generation of talent is rewriting the rules. Are your hiring strategies ready for the shift?

I first met David Paffenholz 🧃 in 2023, when he came out firing on LinkedIn telling industry veterans twice his age that his idea was going to change the game in recruiting 🤣 The chutzpah was impressive but more so was how David dealt with critiques - both fair and unfair - that inevitably followed. Calm, generous, active listener but clear in his own mind where he wanted to go with the product. Juicebox has already proved itself to be a company capable of producing remarkable products for hiring. David is proving himself to be the right leader for it. Can't wait to see what else is coming down the roadmap from him and his team on the back of this fundraise 👊 QUESTION FOR RECRUITERS: "AI-Native Hiring" - what does that look like to you? What do you need from recruitment tech providers like Juicebox to make this vision a reality? Comment below folks, this is your chance to your ideas into the roadmap...

THIS WEEK, IN RECRUITING - ISSUE 258 Ronald Coase and the Rise of the Lobster Powered OPC's... Have you heard of Ronald Coase? Had I known about his work sooner, I'd have saved two businesses and about a decade of my professional life ;-). His concepts of external vs internal transaction costs is key to the succes of Recruiting Brainfood and I highly recommend everyone read his near classic paper, The Nature of the Firm. Anyways, I reckon OpenClaw has a chance to updating the calculus on Coasian costs of running a business, and has a chance of triggering a Cambrian explosion of OPC (One Person Companies). Implications for all, including recruiters on two levels - have a read and let me know what you think! Cheers to Oleeo for supporting this newsletter (cheers Tommy J. W. L.!). Big announcement from Oleoo on 31st March where CEO Charles Hipp and Head of Product Hayley Skivington are going to reveal the next step in candidate screening at Oleeo. I just edited my LinkedIn profile Don't worry, I haven't got a job (!) But following on from yesterday's Brainfood Live, I realised that I hadn't done anything with my profile for at least 5 years, and PROBABLY things might have changed a bit since then. This is particularly important given that LinkedIn uses the data in your profile, along with your posting content, as classifier for what type of creator you are on this platform. So, if you want to improve your reach, your LinkedIn Profile and the content you post should be consistent. This puts us in a box a little bit, but it is how the system currently works. Anyways, all this from Brainfood Live yesterday (watch last video in my timeline), so I thought I need to review and update my profile. Got me thinking though: this is not something we regularly do. Aside from employment change, when was the last time YOU edited your LinkedIn profile?

THIS WEEK, IN RECRUITING - ISSUE 259 AI RECOMMENDATION VS HUMAN JUDGEMENT You know a discussion is brilliant when you can't stop thinking about it long after it concluded. Last weeks's Brainfood Live with Adam Gordon, Jane Moors, Lucinda Pouw, PhD, CPC Pouw and Dr. Richard Claydon on the nature and role of human intuition was so insightful that I've decided to rewatch and distill the conversation into today's essays in Open Kitchen. Key subheaders: 1️⃣ WHAT IS HUMAN INTUITION? It's compressed pattern recognition from zillions of years of evolution, and thousands of hours of practice that emerges as a feeling, rather than as an outcome of analysis 2️⃣ EVOLVED, EMBODIED, EMBEDDED INTELLIGENCES Humans are the three E's - these are the sources of intelligences which make us distinct from AI. It's probably critical for our collective future that we understand and embrace decision making frameworks which come from this. 3️⃣ PROBLEMS WITH HUMANS-IN-THE-LOOP It's a reassuring homily, but under examined in what it really means and what the implications are if we really mean it... 4️⃣ AI HAS THE FORMAL DATA ADVANTAGE We're never going to outcompete AI on its own territory of formal, explicit data. 5️⃣ JUDGEMENT IS WHEN THE DATA RUNS OUT But judgement happens when the data runs out, or when the data cannot provide us with guidance on the choice. This happens a lot in hiring 6️⃣ INTUITION IS OK IF YOU CAN EXPLAIN IT (NO) Intuition often defies explanation because it is emergent from our subconscious. But we need to make it ok, even if we can't explain it! 5 x conditions on where to increase the weight of human judgement vs AI recommendation Have a read and let me know what you think 🤔 Thanks to our friends Workable (cheers Brendan Jeannetti ) for supporting this newsletter. 30,000 companies trust Workable as their core TA / HR platform. DID YOU SEE THE NEWS LAST WEEK? Findem acquired Glider AI - bringing together Talent Discovery with Skill Validation + ID Verification. It’s pretty clear we’re moving into a world where recruiting technology is going to increasingly do more of the work - sourcing, engaging, validating, verifying It follows that how we pay for it will also shift! Reading in between the lines of the official PR release, outcome based pricing seems to be the future for Findem. Remember, that this is the traditional way employers have paid for hiring - contingent on hire being made. If Findem does manage to consolidate the fragmented, multi-vendor supply chain that companies have traditionally relied on to make those hires, then they’ve got a chance to be a much better business than just another AI Sourcing tool. They may become what the next generation of staffing agencies look like.
