It's never been easier to make functional software...so is building a SaaS the new move? I'm skeptical. So I talked to SaaS legend Rob Walling about it, and he gave me some good insight. tl;dr: You can totally build functional, useful software—and have fun doing it. But if you're going to go beyond internal tool to public-facing, market-ready software, you can't half-ass it. You've gotta go all in (and that likely means hiring or partnering with technical talent). Otherwise, you're probably signing up for a world of hurt you're not expecting or prepared for. What do you think? Do you agree with Rob?

Excited to share this one. I talked to Richard, the co-founder of 1of10, about the process they use to consistently help their clients create viral videos. He's worked with some of the biggest creators on the platform and directly helped with videos that have generated 2,000,000,000+ views. We go deep on ideation, research, and the smallest of details that make a big difference. There are lots of slides, lots of examples, and I took lots of notes (which I tried to apply to this video!) 😂 Watch now on my YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@jay

1000 true fans is still a great north star. And you never need to go viral to achieve it.

Email is somehow still underrated. Every Sunday, my emails are: • Sent to ~49,000 • Opened by ~23,000 (43%) • Unsubscribed by ~100 (0.20%) • Read by people I respect and admire • Sponsored by companies/people I believe in • Resulting in hundreds or thousands in purchases Insane.

Off to LA! Next week, I’m keynoting at Altruist’s Build To Grow Summit. I’ll be talking about how financial advisors can use content to grow their practices. I’ve been getting more speaking opportunities over the last 12 months. But when I’m hired to speak there’s a small catch: the whole family comes! It’s a little stressful getting us all packed and across the country (traveling with a stroller and car seat is such a pain) but the middle part is a blast. This time, we’re starting the trip with a short (much needed) vacation visiting my sister. Grateful for the life creating content has created for us. 🙏

It’s a great time to lean into the purest, weirdest, most human version of yourself.

I often wake up feeling behind. Even after a good day, suddenly the score isn't just at zero, it's in the negative—and I have to do a lot of things just to get back to baseline: • Exercising • Clearing my messages • Posting for the day ...you get it. This isn't a great way to feel when you get up in the morning, and it's something that I'm trying to work on. But whenever I'm feeling a little down on myself, this reminder helps me quite a bit.

We're transitioning from an attention economy to a trust economy. There's a difference between an audience and a crowd. A crowd gathers for a spectacle. An audience trusts the person at the center of the show.

One of the biggest opportunities for creators right now: Turning parallel experiences into shared experiences. You are a lightning rod for a particular type of person. Those people tend to be experiencing similar things...but in isolation. They enjoy your content because it makes them feel less alone. Which means there's a big opportunity for you to connect those people to one another (outside of public comments).
