When I taught a graduate course years ago on data science for scientists, I would ask my students to consider the question, "How many cows are there in the state of Texas?" This was about 20 years ago. I asked my students what they thought would happen if they typed that question into the most popular web search engine. After some discussion, we converged on the reality that the search engine (at that period of time) would most likely return web pages containing the words "cows" "state" "Texas", but the web pages would very likely *not* answer our question. I then pointed out to them the huge gap and significant difference between information search (and retrieval) and semantic search (and inference).
