Have you heard of “faceless” soial media accounts? Historically “running a faceless account” just meant creating a profile that didn’t require showing your face: things like hands-and-pans style recipe videos, or close-up nail art tutorials, or motivational quotes over stock images… that sort of thing. But apparently “faceless accounts” are now being promoted as some sort of get-rich-quick scheme, with hoardes of “passive income experts” out there teaching people how to “leverage” and “monetize” other people’s content… They’re out here making tutorials on how to find high-performing content on TikTok or IG, download it, cut out the first few seconds to evade plagiarism detectors, strip out usernames and watermarks, ADD YOUR OWN BRANDED WATERMARK AS IF YOU MADE IT, use ChatGPT to write “viral” captions, and then share it (without credit, of course) to an “faceless” TikTok or IG account optimized for monetization. These “faceless accounts” used to be a way to protect a creators’ privacy, but they’re now being weaponized as a cloak of anonymity for straight up plagiarism and theft of IP. Ew. Even if we set aside the fact that this is actually not remotely “passive,” content is also notoriously NOT a fast path to riches, and social monetization is incredibly unpredictable and subject to the whims of algorithmic overloads who care far more about their own revenue than yours. Besies, if have to resort to theft to pay the bills, there have GOT to be things that offer returns better than a $0.0004 CPV, right?

In Canto’s State of Digital Content 2026 research, many teams pointed to breakdowns in process, clarity, and ownership as content demands increased, and that echoes what I've heard from clients and colleagues first-hand in the last 12 months or so. Keeping content quality and originality/creativity high where there are issues with process is a huge challenge, but it's not impossible.
