I had a great time joining The Fleet podcast with Chris Brandt to discuss where #vehicleelectrification and #automateddriving really stand today. #Transportation is entering a new phase, and #fleets are at the center of it. For private drivers, #EV can feel like a trade-off. For fleets, they create efficiency and predictability. The same applies to #automation. Controlled #fleetoperations are where the technology shows the most promise. Watch the complete episode here: https://lnkd.in/e2h5bsZD

I look forward to hosting the next SAE International in #SiliconValley Meetup on May 7 at the Nordic Innovation House - Silicon Valley: AUTOMOTIVE PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE Expert talk by Hadi Nahari, CEO of Cognomotiv Wed, May 7, 6-8pm | 470 Ramona St., Palo Alto, CA 94301 ABSTRACT: For over two decades, experts have been advocating for Predictive Maintenance. The core practice, however, goes way back: C.H. Waddington, an advisor to the British military during World War II, played a significant role in advocating for condition-based maintenance strategies and is believed to be an early pioneer of the practice. Countless Ph.D. dissertations have been published on Failure Mode Analysis (FMA: one of the core theoretical foundations of Predictive Maintenance), Root Cause Analysis (RCA: another fundamental principle) since, and numerous startups and large companies alike have attempted to build the solution, but there have been problems: sheer complexity of the underlying technology, spotty solutions, lackluster results, unclear business value proposition, and so on. The recent advances in AI might be changing things: some for better, some for worse. This interactive session is for the engineers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts who have a knack for everything-Automotive, cautiously follow AI, and care for uptime and reliability. I hope to see you there... https://lnkd.in/eWsVapBP #automotive #engineering #innovation #advancedanalytics #predictivemaintenance #bigdata

I look forward to be hosting the next SAE International in #SiliconValley Meetup on the evening of July 15 in Palo Alto: RUST - A NEW PROGRAMMING LANGUGE IN AUTOMOTIVE Expert talk by Xander Cesari, automotive engineer based in Michigan Tuesday, July 15, 2025 - 6:00 to 8:00 PM Nordic Innovation House - Silicon Valley - 470 Ramona St., Palo Alto, CA ABSTRACT: For decades the digital heart of automobiles has been the complicated network of safety-critical embedded controllers that control the powertrain. But now they also include the broad user-facing and connected feature set of a smartphone-esque consumer device, making cars some of the most complicated software products being developed. The legacy languages and techniques that were sufficient in decades past are struggling to adapt to the challenge; new tools are needed and the most fundamental tool in software is the programming language. Rust is a new programming language designed for safety, reliability, and security. It strives to eliminate entire classes of bugs before the program even compiles, such as memory access errors. Rust already powers much of the internet but it's gained significant traction in safety-critical industries like automotive. So what is the language? How does it work? How's it being used now and what promise does it hold for the industry? I hope to see you there... #automotive #engineering #innovation #softwaredefinedvehicle #SDV

I look forward to be hosting the next SAE International in #SiliconValley Meetup on February 4 when we will hear from RemotiveLabs about "Scalable Digital Twins for Automotive Software-Defined Vehicles". I hope to see you there: Scalable Digital Twins for Automotive Software-Defined Vehicles Expert talk by Per Sigurdson, CEO and co-founder of RemotiveLabs Feb 4, 6-8pm | Nordic Innovation House - Silicon Valley, Palo Alto, CA ABSTRACT: This demo showcases a virtual vehicle running Android Automotive, enabling scalable, hardware-independent development and validation of automotive software. The demonstration uses Cuttlefish as the reference virtual device and runs natively on Arm-based infrastructure provided by (GCP Axion) or locally on Linux PCs. This Arm-on-Arm setup preserves architectural parity between cloud-based development environments and in-vehicle deployment. The virtual vehicle simulates core vehicle functions, including vehicle properties via the Vehicle HAL (VHAL). System components can be developed, integrated, and validated in a realistic vehicle context without dependence on physical ECUs, test vehicles, or proprietary hardware. The demo supports both open-loop testing, where software behavior is evaluated against predefined inputs, and closed-loop testing, where software interacts dynamically with the simulated vehicle environment in real time. The setup demonstrates how automotive software development can be scaled across cloud environments, enabling parallel testing, continuous integration workflows, and collaboration across distributed teams. The same environment can be used on developer laptops, in CI pipelines, or in the cloud, significantly reducing hardware dependency and accelerating iteration cycles. #automotive #engineering #softwaredefinedvehicle #software #mobility #sweden #gettingstuffdone https://lnkd.in/evUCmhmp

I look forward to hosting the upcoming SAE International in #SiliconValley Meetup. I hope to see you there: VEHICLE FIRES IN MODERN DRIVETRAINS Expert Talk by Abid Kemal, Thermal Scientist & Complex Failure Analyst at Exponent Apr 2, 6-8pm - Nordic Innovation House - Silicon Valley, 470 Ramona St., Palo Alto, CA 94301 Details and Registration: https://lnkd.in/e2FpY-9v ABSTRACT Vehicle fires are a significant hazard and account for more than 15% of the total reported fire incidents in the United States. The introduction of newer drivetrains including BEV, HEV, PHEVs, and subsequent high-profile fire events related to these vehicles, have increased scrutiny on vehicle fire risks. Societies are assessing whether the newer drivetrains are better with respect to fire safety than traditional ICEVs. This presentation will provide background on mechanisms that result in fires in ICEV and BEVs, including a detailed discussion of thermal runaways in EV batteries. Included in the conversation will be a review of the mechanisms that result in thermal runaways and allow for propagation within the battery pack. The role of battery chemistry and state of charge (SOC) on the likelihood of thermal runaway will be examined. The role of SOC on the heat release rate, an important criterion related to survivability, will also be addressed. Lastly, an assessment of the fire trends in vehicles with different drivetrains based on current publicly available data and the challenges and complexities of fire suppression in ICEV and BEV vehicles will be showcased. A few case studies will be presented.

Wow, this may be big: Tesla will end production of Models S and X, building humoid robots instead. Ok, Tesla production has been largely Models 3 and Y lately, but still that is quite a shift. And obviously, Tesla does not consider replacing its aging models, like other manufacturers would. We'll see what will *actually* happen in Tesla Land, never a dull moment...

I really appreciate this perspective here: Why are market capitalizations and the stock market so strong while the overall economy is not really that and consumers are feeling more and more pressure? This study finds that many companies spend less on innovation but more on acquisitions => the companies grow (and with that their stock price) and overall they become more efficient, but they do actually not come up with new products at the same rate. Great article by one of my colleagues at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, very much worth reading! #innovation #stockmarket #marketcap #economy #inflation

Great to see GACC WEST - Representative of German Business acknowledging my 10+ years of participation in its Advisory Board. I am happy to contribute my German-California perspectives regarding the future of mobility, a field shaped by many players: the inventors of the automobile and the innovators in Silicon Valley (among others). In my view, it needs both, and my colleagues at GACC West picked a snipped from one of my talks that points out: we also need advanced infrastructure that supports all those great creations for automated, connected, electric and shared vehicles; otherwise it is just a smart car that has nowhere to go!

I am pleased to announce the next SAE International in #SiliconValley Meetup for September 4 when we will be meeting at the Audi ADAS Hub (not our usual spot) to hear more about: DIGITIZING ROAD RULES - AUDI'S APPROACH FOR MACHINE-READABLE TRAFFIC RULES Expert talk by Ishan Tyagi, Project Lead Traffic Rules (ADAS) at Audi of America Sep 4, 6-8pm - 3087 N First Street, San Jose, CA 95134 ABSTRACT: Automakers and autonomous vehicle (AV) developers face major challenges in complying with fragmented traffic regulations across 89,000+ local governing units, 3,100+ counties, and 50 states. To address this, a unified, AI-driven solution is needed to organize road rules into a searchable database, interpret vague or conflicting regulations, identify jurisdictional differences, and enable easy compliance validation. Audi’s ADAS Hub in San Jose identified this gap four years ago and launched a pioneering initiative to digitize road rules for automated transportation. Today, they are recognized for their leadership by industry stakeholders and regulators. The project tackles common challenges such as decentralized rule structures, limited automation, complex stakeholder landscapes, and rule interpretation. This initiative not only streamlines compliance but also lays the foundation for safer, smarter automated driving systems. Attending the أبوظبي للأنظمة ذاتية الحركة | Abu Dhabi Autonomous Summit 2025 offered me an impressive look at how the UAE — and Abu Dhabi in particular — are positioning themselves in the rapidly evolving global landscape of autonomous mobility across land, air, and sea. What became clear throughout the summit is that the UAE is not trying to compete with the Europe🇪🇺, USA🇺🇸, or China🇨🇳 on their terms — it is carving out its own distinct niche defined by speed, clarity of vision, and strategic alignment between public and private sectors. A few examples: 🚀 A global benchmark-setter, not a follower In their opening remarks, officials stated they are “not waiting for international standards — but setting benchmarks.” This positions the UAE as a place where global players can test, deploy, and refine technologies alongside evolving regulatory frameworks, rather than waiting for them to catch up. ⚙️ A deployment-focused alternative to the major innovation hubs While the USA is strong in research, Europe in safety and industrial excellence, and China in scale, Abu Dhabi emphasizes deployment speed. Processes that take months elsewhere can be completed in weeks, creating a compelling environment for companies seeking real-world pilots, not just pilots on paper. 🛠️ From technology buyer to technology builder Through strategic clusters like SAVI | Smart & Autonomous Vehicle Industry, Abu Dhabi is evolving into a creator of technology — a complementary pole to established innovation ecosystems in Silicon Valley, Shenzhen, and Europe’s automotive heartlands. 🤝 A governance model based on co-creation The UAE highlights a regulatory philosophy built on collaboration, in which the private sector is the driver and the public sector the enabler, integrating agility with a strong emphasis on safety and public trust. 📊 Measured risk-taking as an economic asset The UAE describes itself as a “sandbox of the world” — not because risk is ignored, but because risks are identified, mitigated, and managed. This enables innovation to keep pace with forward-looking regulation, a balance that is increasingly essential for global competitiveness. 🚁 A multi-modal vision of autonomy From autonomous vehicles to maritime systems to more than 10 planned or operational vertiports, the UAE’s goal of 25% autonomous mobility by 2040 reflects a holistic and integrated mobility strategy. 🇦🇪 A diversified, talent-driven economy Reducing petroleum dependency from 80% to 43% is not just an economic statistic — it signals a shift toward future industries supported by on-site talent, venture investment, and strong leadership. #AutonomousAD #ADAutonomousWeek #ADAutonomousSummit #autonomousdriving #automatedvehicles #robotaxi #evtol #vertiport #UAM #UAE #innovation #future

Honored to be co-author with Bryant Walker Smith on this article in Business Insider covering our experiences with robotaxis in China. Here’s the summary: - Bryant Walker Smith and Sven Beiker have spent hours riding in both Chinese and American robotaxis. - China's robotaxis aren't perfect, but they're ahead of most of the world, they say. - Quirks like tricky apps and long waits are part of the experience of early robotaxi riding But there is much more in the article: perspectives on the leading companies (Baidu Apollo, Pony.ai, WeRide) and observations in the major cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Wuhan). If you are interested in how well robotaxis perform in China, this is where you want to start. #automateddriving #autonomousvehicle #robotaxi #selfdriving #driverless #china #futuremobility

I am proud to share the results of a great collaboration with Ingrid Skogsmo, Pony.ai, and Zeekr Technology Europe now published in the report “Learning from the Deployment of Robotaxis at Scale.” This project was funded by Vinnova in conjunction with Future Mobility. We discuss large-scale robotaxi operations, primarily in California and China, and point out the lessons learned that should help greatly to anticipate future deployments in other places (Europe and Sweden in particular) in the pursuit of sustainability, safety, and equality. All this is easier said than done, which we realized in several cases and write about in the report. The insights should be of interest to anyone in automated driving, shared mobility, public transport, policy development, or industry strategies. I look forward to your thoughts and feedback. Feel free to comment below or reach out directly if you’d like to discuss the findings and their implications. Today at SAE International’s Automated Transportation Symposium (ATS 2025), I had the pleasure of presenting insights from our new study “Learning for Deployment of Robotaxis at Scale”, conducted together with Ingrid Skogsmo (Ph.D.h.c.) and funded by Vinnova, the Swedish Innovation Agency. Our research - supported by Pony.ai, Zeekr Technology Europe, and Future Mobility - examined what Europe can learn from large-scale robotaxi deployments in the U.S. and China, and how these lessons can guide evidence-based, equitable adoption in European contexts. Key themes discussed: - Safety & Security: Robotaxis must prove safety and involve first responders early. - Integration into the Mobility System: True value lies in complementing public transport and serving underserved areas. - Business Models: Viability requires scale—fleets of several hundred vehicles and partnerships with ride-hailing operators. - Cities’ Roles & Responsibilities: Municipalities must define their goals early, demand data transparency, and manage infrastructure proactively. Our conclusion: Europe shouldn’t wait for companies to come knocking—it should define its own mobility goals and shape the frameworks that will enable safe, sustainable, and scalable robotaxi deployment. The full report is available on VTI’s website for download: https://lnkd.in/et4dmbeh #ATS2025 #Robotaxis #CCAM #AutomatedDriving #FutureMobility #Vinnova #Innovation #Europe #VTI #SiliconValleyMobility
