Thank you Jesse Newman at the Wall Street Journal for highlighting President Trump's recent Executive Order that "includes a list of products that could receive zero tariffs under trade agreements with foreign nations that are being negotiated by Trump’s team. That list, dubbed 'Annex III,' is aimed at 'products that cannot be grown, mined, or naturally produced in the United States.'”
Newman and her colleague quoted me on trying to hold the line on prices and noting that certain tuna products are among the goods now potentially eligible for tariff exemptions. Exceptions for foods like tuna are particularly important as the Trump administration pushes its “Make America Healthy Again” agenda.
At Chicken of the Sea, we have American workers canning tuna right here on American soil in Lyons, Georgia, yet these products are still subject to tariffs on packaging and ingredients. The tuna itself is imported for canning from the warmest waters around the world. This Executive Order opens the door for foreign countries to negotiate tariff exemptions.
