Years ago while driving through the countryside of Wales, UK, I saw something very similar to this picture. In that case, a tree had fallen in a creek that winded alongside the road I was driving on. Half of the tree's roots were exposed to the air, with the other half still in the ground. Judging by the dryness of the airborne roots, it had been in that position for months, if not years. In spite of this, there were green leaves still growing on the branches. I was struck by the sheer tenacity of that tree to never give up--a lesson for all of us.

Whether it's dealing with a team member's poor performance, admitting our mistakes, or addressing ongoing conflict between two employees, great leaders never fear tough conversations. My advice: address the elephant in the room, deal with it, and move on. What's the most difficult conversation you've had to have?

For years I've said that the best leaders are those who see themselves as being at the service of those they lead. "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Yes, breaking up can be hard to do. Be it a business partnership, friendship or romantic relationship--parting ways sometimes can be difficult. We learn more about a person or organization at the end of a relationship than at the beginning. The way we carry ourselves as we exit the relationship says more about our character than any other phase of the relationship. Here are some tips on finishing well: 1) Keep your overall objective in mind. 2) Put your emotions in check--keep a clear mind. 3) Be empathetic. 4) Be honest, but civil. 5) Send with them your best wishes as they go.

Once again, John Wooden nailed it: "The most powerful leadership tool you have is your own personal example." The people we lead are swayed less by what we say and more by what we do and how we carry ourselves. The "do as I say, not as I do" may work with kids, but it doesn't fly with adults at work. They see through the inconsistency and your credibility will be undermined. As leaders, we have to walk the talk.

LEADERSHIP TIP: This is a great article about the hiring philosophy of Amazon.com's CEO Jeff Bezos. Excerpt: "Setting the bar high in our approach to hiring has been, and will continue to be, the single most important element of Amazon.com's success." Bezos always asks 3 questions before hiring someone and insists that his team do the same. Great insight! http://lnkd.in/bjbBGUW

When asked how he got the Warriors to be a defensive-minded team, head coach Steve Kerr responded: "I didn't. Mark Jackson did." This is a powerful example of humility in leadership. Instead of taking credit and making up some BS response, Kerr gave credit where credit is due--to his predecessor. It's one of the reasons I root for the Warriors--because this reflects the thriving (and winning) culture they've created. I wrote an article about the team after last year's upset in the NBA Finals. I'm hoping for a different outcome this year! https://lnkd.in/bfnqZ9H

Terrific article on 9 things great leaders say to their teams daily. This is a great list. To this list I would add: "No, and here's why..." to round out the list at 10. Make a point to, as appropriate, incorporate these in your conversations over the next 10 days. Definitely worth reading!

Here's an insightful infographic on the cost of bad bosses. Studies have shown that the #1 reason people leave their employers is a bad boss. Survey highlight: 65% of those surveyed said they'd rather have a new boss than a pay raise! Never underestimate the impact you can have as a strong leader. http://lnkd.in/bTD-kyQ #leadership

"I would be lying if I didn't admit sadness that our wonderful airline is merging with another," Richard Branson. I'm with you Richard. This is the most disappointing M&A news I've read in a very long time. Virgin America has been my favorite domestic airline since my first flight with them in 2008. While I'd like to believe that the strong culture VA has developed would permeate the combined entity, history instructs us that the chances of that happening are slim at best. Farewell, my friend. It's been real.

Fascinating study. For years, I've suspected that the CEO's character is a significant contributor to his/her company's success. Punch line: "The researchers found that CEOs whose employees gave them high marks for character had an average return on assets of 9.35% over a two-year period. That’s nearly five times as much as what those with low character ratings had (ROA of 1.93%)."

COMMUNICATION TIP: When communicating, always meet people where they are and take them where you want to them to go. Stephen Covey called this “Seek first to understand, then be understood.” The more you understand their needs, their personality, their communication style, and their current mood, the more effective you’ll be in communicating with them. #communication #influence www.clifton-anderson.com
