When world models startup AMI - Advanced Machine Intelligence launched with a monster $1bn seed round earlier this month, one name was on everyone’s lips: the company’s original founder, former chief AI scientist at Meta and all-round tech superstar Yann LeCun.
But LeCun won’t be operating on his own. To lead AMI as CEO, he has appointed one of French tech’s most reputable founders, Alex LeBrun, whose scoreboard includes three successful AI companies and two exits to NASDAQ-listed businesses.
Described to me as a “fully americanised Frenchie” who understands scientific complexities as much as how to create a good product and generate revenue, Lebrun was hailed as an excellent choice to lead the business. “His magic is to turn AI science into AI products that everyone will buy,” one investor tells me.
According to friends and colleagues, he is also a “genuine good guy” who despite his successes has kept his feet on the ground. He’s certainly retained a taste for simple pleasures, as reflected in his social media posts, which sway from hot takes on AI to updates on his 29-year-long journey of reading Proust’s "In Search of Lost Time".
