📬 Storytelling at work isn’t just for keynote speeches. It belongs in your inbox, too. If you want your emails—whether team updates or company newsletters—to actually get read, here are 3 simple ways to make them more human: ➡️ Start the email with a story. Something a team member did, a lesson learned, or a funny fail. ➡️ Be geniune. Don’t be afraid to include the silly details or scrub it clean of your actual personality. No one wants emails from robots.  ➡️ It’s ok if it’s not technically perfect. If we wanted to read a textbook, we’d read a textbook. I know it’s tempting to let AI polish everything up. But if it’s too smooth, you run the risk of it slipping right past people. Story > Script. Connection > Perfection. Have you ever received a stand out work email? This week I finally got my hands on a rare video of a story I've only told on stage maybe twice before... If you've read Stories that Stick (even if you only read the intro)... You'll recognize the story of the sales "pitch" that hijacked my husband. It is the most incredible example of a sales story I've ever seen. Just one, simple story that turned a person who A) didn't use the product, B) didn't want the product, C) didn't even try the product... into an immediate and desperate buyer. As always, if your sales team would benefit from stronger strategic storytelling, I'd be happy to come work with your audience too!

I used to face the Tuesday after a three day weekend with a whole lotta dread. Want to be easier to refer to? Be easier to remember. If referrals are part of your business, remember this: Clients don’t refer based on your ROI. They refer based on who you are—and how you made them feel. Stories make you memorable. Stats make you… forgettable. If your clients only know your numbers, they’ll struggle to introduce you. My mom once told me the story of a conversation between her and her dad, my grandfather. He told her that sometimes he wished it had been more acceptable for fathers to play a major role in the raising of their children... As if he knew, or at least hoped that maybe some day, dads would spend more time with their daughters and sons. Two generations later, here we are. 🧠 Want to age better? Tell more stories. No, really. A study found that group-based storytelling improved not just mood, but also mindset, in older adults. Participants reported a more positive view of aging itself. That’s a big deal. Because our beliefs about aging have a massive impact on how we actually age. Which means storytelling could be the missing piece to making the whole process a little bit easier. 💬 Whether you work in senior care, support aging loved ones, or simply notice the years moving faster. 💬  Start a weekly storytelling circle. Invite your parents or grandparents to share old memories. Reflect on your own milestones. The protein shakes and weighted vests matter. But so do the stories we tell about who we’ve been and who we’re still becoming. What’s a story from your life that you think “future-you” will need to remember?

Several years ago I was at an event and happened to catch the end of another speaker's presentation. She had a really big story to tell and as I listened I remember feeling so... inadequate. 😞 I started to question my own story. Like, it wasn’t big enough or didn't mean as much. That my story couldn’t compete with hers and why would anyone want to hear it. And if -I- can feel this way… I know you perhaps have felt this way too. Maybe it isn't as you're about to step on stage -- but maybe it's when you're scrolling through social media. Or at a meeting for work but don't speak up because you think someone is more experienced. Or maybe it's out with a new group of friends and you//your story just seems small. Regardless of the reason or where // when it happens... Don’t let the fear that your story isn’t good enough keep you from telling it. The more stories we share, the more stories we hear and the more we understand about each other and THAT is a very good thing! ❤️ (Share this post with someone who needs to hear it)

💡  Why AI shouldn’t write your emails (and how a typo-filled message helped build a $60M brand) During the 2022 holiday season, Graza—yes, the olive oil in the squeeze bottle—was in hot water. Orders were late, bottles dented, labels flaking off. CEO Andrew Benin could have had AI write a polished apology email. Instead, he wrote it himself. It started with: “Hello very important Graza person,” It was imperfect. There were typos. But it was human. It told a story. And most importantly… it worked. 78% open rate. Floods of support. A brand saved (or if not saved, then next-level loyalty unlocked). ✅  Takeaway: Your customers, your team, your people… want you. I was working on the "Acknowledgement" section of my upcoming book and as I was thanking all of the people who helped make the book possible... I thought of YOU. Every year on New Year’s Eve, we stay in.    Michael and I make dinner, drink champagne and, most importantly, we review the year before and set goals for the year to come.    It’s been our tradition for 10 years and it takes all night. In fact, this year, it took even longer because the kids are older now and they stay up later than they did when they were babies so Michael and I got off to a later start than we expected.   We’ve developed a whole system for our New Year’s Eve (maybe I’ll share it some time), but one of the things we discuss is: What was the biggest game changer that year?    What decision // action // thing made the biggest difference?    Looking back through our goals book, one year stood out and I thought it might be helpful if I shared it with you.    In 2021 the biggest game changer for us — both professionally AND personally — was Tori.   Tori is my virtual assistant. Tori is the keeper of my sanity. Tori makes my whole life better.    My clients know Tori as the purveyor of all details, the keeper of the cracks. My team knows Tori as the person to talk to if they need something from me and I have spaced on getting them an answer. Michael knows Tori as the perfect go-between who makes the sometimes rocky endeavor of working with his wife a bit more smooth. My friends know Tori as the person who can get us into any restaurant. We are heading out of town tonight for the holiday weekend and in addition to all the packing and prepping and work that has to get done in advance, someone also had to take my daughter to ballet and pick her up again… When it looked like I would be the one to do it… I’ll admit, I was a little crabby. And I don’t know about you… but sometimes it doesn’t take much for “a little crabby” to become “a whole lotta crabby,” especially during intense times like the holidays. But then I vaguely remembered a story I wrote and posted on Instagram about this very same thing — a story that ended happily. Not really WANTING to spiral into a deep hole of crabbiness, I scrolled back until, almost 2 years to the day, there it was: NOVEMBER 26th, 2019 I was crabby I had to take my daughter to ballet tonight. . It’s all the way across town. . We have to leave at 3:30pm which is WAY too early for my workday to be done. . I’ve been doing non-stop podcast interviews (which is amazing ✨) but means I have to play catch up on all my other work. . Basically.... I was thinking Michael was going to take her. . He thought I was going to take her (since I haven’t yet — because I’m usually gone on ballet nights). . So I took her. Fine. . And when I picked her up... she danced her way home. She twirled and leaped and then posed by the fountain outside Lincoln Center. . “Take a picture Mama.” . The sky was dark, but blue. The night air was wintery, but warm. And the city glowed. . I took this picture... a picture worth a thousand unreturned emails. ❤️ — There it was. The story I needed. The story I chose to tell myself.
