The city has received a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2025 Municipal Equality Index, a nationwide evaluation of 506 municipalities that measures how inclusive local laws, policies and services are for LGBTQ+ residents. City officials said the top score reflects Mayor Wilson’s ongoing commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community. The Office of Equity and Human Rights’ LGBTQIA2S+ Policy team leads the work for the city, with special recognition for Senior Policy Analyst Lex Jakusovszky (they/them) and Aubri Qian (she/her), whose work was instrumental in the city’s success. Today, the City of Portland launched a national search for its first long-term city administrator – marking another milestone in the city’s new form of government. The city administrator oversees an $8.6 billion budget and 6,800 public servants who deliver day-to-day services across four major areas: public safety, public works, community and economic development, and city operations. As Portland’s executive leader, the city administrator also serves as a trusted advisor to the mayor. Although this role is common in city governments, it’s new for Portland. In 2022, voters approved an overhaul to the way the city elects leaders, makes decisions and delivers services. Now, an expanded city council sets policy and connects with constituents; the mayor runs day-to-day operations, with the help of a city administrator. Visit the City’s website to learn more. Each year, Portland Arbor Day moves to a different neighborhood to highlight the city's diverse tree canopy and recognize local efforts to grow and care for it. In partnership with leadership from Sacajawea Head Start, the 2025 celebration welcomed autumn with a day full of activities, learning, and hands-on stewardship for learners, their families, and Cully neighbors. This year's Arbor Day featured a ceremony for the recipients of the 2025 Bill Naito Community Trees Awards, a highlight of the day: Dr. Vivek Shandas received the individual award for his service on the Urban Forestry Commission from 2015 to 2023, increasing community and scientific awareness around the connection between heat, urban canopy, and public health. Morning Star Baptist Church received the group award for their two-year long endeavor to increase greenspace and contribute to growing the urban canopy in the Cully Neighborhood, in partnership with Depave and funded through a PCEF green infrastructure grant. When I think back to fifth grade, I remember a year of firsts. The first time I shared stories that I wrote with my classmates. The first time I rode my bike down Suicide Hill. And the first time I was kissed. More than anything that year, I felt strongly about the person that I was becoming, and who I would be when I grew up. And writing was already becoming a really big part of my life. Fifth grade is that funny no man’s land between childhood and adulthood when you start to understand what’s happening in the larger world and how it impacts you. Hostages were in Iran, Mount Saint Helens blew its top…and John Lennon died. All of these things had nothing to do with me. And yet they had everything to do with me. Today, I spent some time volunteering at a public school in a small town here in Oregon. We set up a classroom for the incoming fifth graders, who start school after Labor Day. It’s interesting, comparing my day-to-day work with a morning of asking questions like “where do you want the pom-poms, pinecones and agates?” I moved tables, hung signs, cleaned surfaces, organized cabinets and generally worked as hard as I could. And as I thought about the kids who are going to start school in a couple of weeks, I couldn’t help but think back to my own fifth grade year. I envy what’s in front of these students and the excitement a new school year brings. Maybe one of them will write a story and share it with their friends. Maybe someone will find their first true love. And maybe somebody else will be a daredevil. Or maybe they’ll do it all differently. Whatever they do, I hope it’s their best year ever.

In life you will find yourself in unexpected places meeting unexpected people And you will be struck by how similar your experiences are You’ll approach each other with your own stories, but after a while, some of my story and some of your story will become *our story* I am grateful to the people I have worked with over the years, many of whom became more than coworkers to me. You’ve touched my life in unexpected ways and I hope you remember me with a smile also. One of my favorite things to do this time of year is to drive around, finding houses that are decked out for the holidays. Wherever you are, I hope you’re ready for a beautiful holiday season filled with your own unique traditions.
