This is my favourite goal-setting exercise: Here's how it works: Imagine it's December 31, 2026. You achieved the goal you set at the start of the year. Now write a letter 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 yourself (not to yourself!) in the third person: → Opening: Describe the goal you achieved.  → Middle: Name the obstacles you faced and how you overcame them.  → The Turning Point: What was the moment everything shifted? A belief? A behavior? A decision?  → Closing: What did you learn about yourself in the process? This exercise is based on a psychological technique called illeism: writing about yourself in the third person. When you write about your future self in the third person, you're no longer trapped inside today's doubts. You begin to see your own path forward the way you'd see it for someone you deeply care about - with patience, realism, and genuine belief. P.S. More people need to know about this study: In my new book Beyond Belief, I talk about one of Dr Richard Wiseman’s most famous studies. He asked participants to flip through a newspaper and count the number of photos it contained. What the participant didn’t know was that halfway through, a huge ad read: 🛑 “Stop counting. There are 43 photos in this newspaper.” Below this was a second message: “Tell the experimenter you have seen this and win $250.” Most “unlucky” participants missed the message entirely. They were so focused on completing the assigned task that they filtered out everything else - including a cash prize staring them in the face. Meanwhile, those who considered themselves lucky were far more likely to spot the message and claim the money. To get luckier, get better at spotting opportunities. I don't consider myself religious, but I pray. Here's why: When we pray or engage in ritual, we’re not merely thinking about our values or hopes. We’re practicing them. As I explain in Chapter 9 of Beyond Belief, this act reinforces neural pathways, emotional habits, and psychological resilience. The doing itself becomes transformative, regardless of our certainty about religious beliefs. If you count yourself among those who are not religious but find the emptiness of pure skepticism equally unsatisfying, I offer this: You can pray anyway. You can speak into the silence, lean on rituals that people have found meaningful for millennia, and find strength without certainty. This story made me rethink everything I knew about pain and performance: 56-year-old former derivatives executive Daniel Gisler arrived at a Swiss hospital for a procedure that typically demands full sedation. Gisler refused to be sedated. His only shield against pain was the guidance of a fellow hypnosis student, someone he’d met just months before. The surgeon watched in disbelief as Gisler, fully awake and unmedicated, drifted somewhere beyond the boundaries of pain. He was aware of the pressure, the tugging, even the scraping of metal inside his body. But in his mind, he was somewhere else entirely. Gisler’s experience is just one data point in a growing body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of hypnosedation. Surgery without anesthesia isn’t something most of us would consider, and that’s not the point of the story. But the fact that thousands of ordinary people, like Daniel Gisler, have successfully undergone major procedures this way reveals something profound about human potential: We can reshape our perception of reality by directing our attention through the power of belief. This "longevity" study blew my mind In a landmark study, Dr Becca Levy and colleagues followed 660 people aged 50+ for nearly 23 years. They discovered that those with more positive views of aging lived 7.5 years longer than those with negative views, even after controlling for health status, socioeconomic factors, and other variables. Why? When people hold negative aging beliefs (“I might fall” or “I’m too old for this”), they’re more likely to avoid physical challenges. Avoiding challenges leads to actual physical deconditioning. The deconditioning makes activities more difficult and potentially more painful, which reinforces avoidance. Socially, this often leads to isolation, which increases stress and depression risk. Fact. Faith. Belief. Most people think they're the same thing. They're not. A FACT is true whether you believe it or not. Water freezes at 0° Celsius.  Light­ travels at approximately 300,000 kilometers per second.  These are facts: measurable, verifiable, and true, whether one believes them or not. At the other extreme is FAITH:  a conviction that doesn’t require evidence.  Faith can be inspiring, but by definition, it doesn’t ask for proof. Most of life’s essential questions happen in the vast, messy space between the two. Will this business succeed? Should I take this job? Is this the right person to marry? That's where BELIEFS live. A belief sits right in the middle between fact and faith: open to revision, open to change. Beliefs aren't truths. They're tools. Which means you can choose them. Overthinking = Stuck in a mental maze. Here’s how to break the cycle: Step 1: Ask yourself: Am I replaying the same thought?  👉 If no, acknowledge it without judgment. Let it drift away.  👉 If yes, ask: Can I affect the situation? Step 2: If it’s beyond your control, let it go.  👉 If you can influence it, ask: Will it matter tomorrow? Step 3: Keep zooming out. 👉 Will it matter next week? 👉 Will it matter next year? If the answer is no, release it.  If the answer is yes, take action. Because action is the antidote to overthinking. This simple sequence trains your mind to stop ruminating and start focusing on what truly matters. The most important iOS upgrade this year: Your BELIEFS Think about the last year. Visualization might be sabotaging you Here’s why: NYU psychologist Dr. Gabriele Oettingen spent decades studying this. In one experiment, she hooked participants up to blood pressure monitors and asked them to vividly visualize achieving their biggest dreams — the job, the body, the relationship. Their blood pressure dropped immediately. Sounds good, right? It wasn't. Their bodies had already registered the emotional reward — before any work was done. In my book Beyond Belief, I call this the Circle of False Promise. It works like this: you fantasize → reality disappoints → you feel more helpless → you escape back into fantasy. Each cycle makes it harder to act. The good news? There's a science-backed alternative. Instead of visualizing success in isolation, you need to deliberately pair your goal with the real obstacles in your way. Then create an if-then plan for when those obstacles show up.
