Our ELLIS Alicante Foundation PhD student, Aditya Gulati, PhD successfully defended his thesis on Dec 12th with the highest grade!! Congratulations, Aditya!!! 🎉 The thesis is entitled "Judging Books by Their Cover: The Impact of Facial Attractiveness on Humans and AI". It provides a systematic investigation of how facial attractiveness influences human judgments and decision-making, and how similar biases emerge in modern AI systems. By combining behavioral experiments with computational and machine learning analyses, this work offers novel and important insights into appearance-based bias both in humans and algorithms. Aditya's research has been extensively published in top-tier venues, including AIES, AAAI, EWAF, IC2S2, ECCV and the Royal Society Open Science, with a highly impactful paper in the top 5% of the world according to Altmetric 📚✨. It has been done in the context of the ELIAS - European Lighthouse of AI for Sustainability H2020 project. I could not feel prouder of Aditya's scientific and societal contributions, in addition to him being an absolutely wonderful team member. Aditya's attitude, always willing to help and volunteer, is a real gem. Moreover, he is one of the brave four first ELLIS PhD students who first joined ELLIS Alicante Foundation and helped make of ELLIS Alicante what it is today. 💕 Aditya will continue his work at ELLIS Alicante as a postdoc, which we are very excited about. He will have a chance to exercise his mentorship skills to our new ELLIS PhD students Kim Zierahn and Diego Miguel Lozano ✨ 😊 I wanted to thank Professor Miguel Ángel Lozano Ortega and Bruno Lepri for being such amazing and supportive co-advisors; to Bruno Lepri also for hosting and mentoring Aditya for 6 months at Fondazione Bruno Kessler - FBK; to professors Nick Chater, Iyad Rahwan and German Gonzalez Serrano for their constructive and thoughtful feedback, and their enthusiasm and effort in reviewing the thesis on time. What a great week at ELLIS Alicante Foundation!! ✨ Our ELLIS PhD graduate, Piera Riccio, presented with great success our paper “ImageSet2Text: Describing Sets of Images Through Text” at AAAI 2026 in Singapore. This is joint work with Francesco Galati, Kajetan Schweighofer and Noa Garcia Pre-print available here: https://lnkd.in/d8qyBDgN Our Postdoctoral researcher, Adrián Arnaiz Rodríguez, will present "Oversmoothing, Oversquashing, Heterophily, Long-Range, and more: Demystifying Common Beliefs in Graph Machine Learning", co-authored with Federico Errica, at ICLR 2026. This is a position paper on the current state of graph ML. "Large reasoning models are autonomous jailbreak agents" is our latest paper published Nature Communications! ✨ https://lnkd.in/gKW-kiGu Jailbreaking – bypassing built-in safety mechanisms in AI models – has traditionally required complex technical procedures or specialized human expertise. In this study, we show that the persuasive capabilities of large reasoning models (LRMs) simplify and scale jailbreaking, converting it into an inexpensive activity accessible to non-experts. We evaluated the capabilities of four LRMs (DeepSeek-R1, Gemini 2.5 Flash, Grok 3 Mini, Qwen3 235B) to act as autonomous adversaries conducting multi-turn conversations with nine widely used target models. LRMs received instructions via a system prompt, before proceeding to planning and executing jailbreaks with no further supervision. We performed extensive experiments with a benchmark of harmful prompts covering several sensitive domains. This setup yielded an overall jailbreak success rate across all model combinations of 97.14%. Our study reveals an alignment regression, in which LRMs can systematically erode the safety guardrails of other models, highlighting the urgent need to further align frontier models not only to resist jailbreak attempts, but also to prevent them from being co-opted into acting as jailbreak agents. An exciting new paper to appear at Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) 2026 by one of our stellar PhD graduates, Piera Riccio, and collaborators Francesco Galati Kajetan Schweighofer Noa Garcia and her advisor Nuria Oliver, PhD ✨ Have you ever wished you had a way to automatically create textual summaries of large collections of images? In this paper, we propose, ImageSet2Text, a novel method which precisely does so. Based on large language models, visual-question answering chains, an external lexical graph, and CLIP-based verification, ImageSet2Text iteratively extracts key concepts from image subsets and organizes them into a structured concept graph. We conduct extensive experiments evaluating the quality of the generated descriptions in terms of accuracy, completeness, and user satisfaction. We also examine the method's behavior through ablation studies, scalability assessments, and failure analyses. Results demonstrate that ImageSet2Text combines data-driven AI and symbolic representations to reliably summarize large image collections for a wide range of applications.
