Stability used to be the default. Careers, companies, economies, they moved slowly. You could plan, prepare, and predict.
Not anymore.
Today, standing still is actively expensive. Markets evolve faster than our org charts. Technologies emerge faster than our strategies. What you did yesterday is irrelevant tomorrow.
Yet, nobody taught us the skills for this new reality. Adaptability isn’t in any MBA syllabus. Resilience isn’t a KPI. Creativity, curiosity, and mental agility, the things that actually matter, are largely learned by trial, error, and a bit of chaos.
We’re in an era where being “good at your job” isn’t enough. You have to be good at relearning your job, every few months.
And that’s the point: the cost of standing still isn’t measured in missed promotions, it’s measured in irrelevance.
So here’s a thought: stop chasing stability. Start chasing flexibility. Invest in skills that survive volatility. Build habits that thrive in chaos.
Because the world won’t wait for you to catch up, and neither should you.
