I’ve just about recovered from MAD//North last week, which probably tells you everything you need to know about how good it was. What an event. So many brilliant people in one place, so many interesting conversations, and a proper buzz around the whole thing. The sort of atmosphere you only get when people are genuinely curious about ideas rather than just politely nodding at slides. A real highlight (beyond the racing simulator at the MAD//Masters booth) for me was being on the main stage alongside Rory Sutherland and Tom Ridges 🐄 Our conversation explored a simple but often overlooked idea in marketing: people don’t adopt things because of channels, they adopt because of other people. A few themes that really stuck with me: • “Herd mentality” isn’t irrational, it’s efficient. Humans use social signals as a shortcut for decision-making. Yet marketers often obsess over price or product features while underestimating the power of social proof. • Growth isn’t just reach, it’s networks. Tom explained the difference between simple contagion (one exposure might trigger action) and complex contagion (where people need multiple signals from different people). Most meaningful behaviour change sits firmly in the second camp. • Redundancy is not waste. Rory made the brilliant point that what looks inefficient in media terms, hearing something several times from different sources, is often exactly what makes behaviour change possible. • Adoption has thresholds. People move from observer to adopter once enough of their network signals that something is normal, useful, or worth trying. Brands that understand this design for momentum, not just impressions. • Talkability beats mere visibility. The goal isn’t just to be noticed, it’s to create something people actually want to mention to someone else. Check out the full session here - https://lnkd.in/ggjEbCvx I also had the chance to interview Rory and Tom in the Leaders Lab, where we took a deeper dive into AI and the psychology of advertising, exploring how technology is changing the tools we use, but not the fundamental human dynamics that drive influence and behaviour. Huge thanks to everyone who made it such a fantastic event. Still buzzing from it. Well done team. Everyone absolutely smashed it. Stability used to be the default. Careers, companies, economies, they moved slowly. You could plan, prepare, and predict. Not anymore. Today, standing still is actively expensive. Markets evolve faster than our org charts. Technologies emerge faster than our strategies. What you did yesterday is irrelevant tomorrow. Yet, nobody taught us the skills for this new reality. Adaptability isn’t in any MBA syllabus. Resilience isn’t a KPI. Creativity, curiosity, and mental agility, the things that actually matter, are largely learned by trial, error, and a bit of chaos. We’re in an era where being “good at your job” isn’t enough. You have to be good at relearning your job, every few months. And that’s the point: the cost of standing still isn’t measured in missed promotions, it’s measured in irrelevance. So here’s a thought: stop chasing stability. Start chasing flexibility. Invest in skills that survive volatility. Build habits that thrive in chaos. Because the world won’t wait for you to catch up, and neither should you. If you want to turn this mindset into a superpower, explore the April intake of MAD//Masters, where we teach the skills nobody told us about. Had a fantastic day yesterday at MAD//Meets. A huge turnout and a brilliant opportunity to connect with so many great people across the industry, days like this really remind you of the value of getting in a room together. I also thoroughly enjoyed my lunchtime chat with Rory, where we explored: 💡 The illusion of logic vs. social proof 💡 The value of perceived authenticity 💡 The power of small psychological signals 💡 Irrationality as a competitive advantage …and plenty more. In a world that rewards noise, it’s often the subtle signals that win. A big well done to Ingenuity for putting on such a smashing event 👏 MAD//FEST Rory Sutherland Ian Houghton Dan Brain Bindi Houghton Chris Kemp Duncan Wood Kate Lewis
