⚡𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 & 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 Advanced surface technologies are gaining importance across industries – from #automotive and #braking systems to textiles and emerging #hydrogen applications. Functional coatings such as DLC, nitrides and carbon-based layers help improve wear resistance, reduce friction and increase durability in demanding environments. This growing relevance was reflected at EnggCoat 2026, a #coating conference held at IIT Bombay in Mumbai. As part of the program, two of our BMG colleagues contributed with inspiring talks: ▪️Stefan Beirle presented insights into an inline coating machine for industrial coatings, highlighting applications for electrolyzers, fuel cells, hydrogen barrier coatings and sheet substrates.  ▪️Varit Gupta introduced the Plasma Coating System (PCS) – also known as a flex machine – showcasing how modern coating equipment enables flexible processing of DLC and tool coatings within a single machine platform. Discussions also highlighted how 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱𝗹𝘆, increasing the need for scalable and cost-competitive production technologies. Bipolar plates account for around 80% of the weight and 45% of the cost of a #PEM #fuelcell stack. Developing cost-effective and high-performing solutions is therefore key to enabling large-scale PEMFC adoption💧 #Coating plays a key role in this – directly influencing corrosion resistance and contact resistance, two factors critical for long-term durability and overall system efficiency. To meet these demands, our new modular inline coating line combines conventional PVD with a proprietary PECVD process – reducing the coating cost per part. The carrier-based substrate handling system is designed to minimize coating material waste. Its #modular, #scalable architecture allows for a cost-efficient production start and step-by-step expansion as demand grows. In advanced manufacturing, early-stage validation is essential to reduce risks and ensure scalability - and our labs provide the environment to do exactly that💡 Last week, we welcomed Christian Menzel, Dr. Alexander Kohs & Christopher Golz from Bertrandt Group to our technology development labs. The focus: how to improve and scale manufacturing processes in both development and series production. A key part of the exchange was the potential for future collaboration in #battery #testing - from early-stage validation in prototyping to end-of-line testing in high-volume production. The lab tour offered insights into #machinevision, forming technologies, PVD and chemical #coating and #robotics. Two battery assembly lines currently under construction illustrated how lab-based development supports scalable system design. Another highlight: the future role #digital and #intelligent solutions. One core topic was how #digitaltwins of machines and processes can be used to simulate, monitor & continuously optimize performance. Am 16. September 2025 trafen sich INPLAS-Mitglieder und Gäste bei BSH Home Appliances Group in Traunreut, um fertigungsrelevante Fragestellungen gemeinsam zu diskutieren. It was a pleasure to join The 7th Vacuum Technology Exchange Conference 2025 in Shenzhen, China hosted by Shenzhen Association for Vacuum Technology Industries (SAVTI). Many thanks for the kind invitation, the excellent organization and the opportunity to contribute to the official opening of the conference. During my talk I introduced Bosch’s advanced PECVD technology for highly efficient DLC deposition as well as our latest innovation in microwave assisted sputtering available in the coating machines from Bosch Manufacturing Solutions | BMG. This new approach enables the deposition of metal nitrides at high hardness – and does so without a compromise in deposition rate and the need of post processing. A very relevant perspective – thanks for highlighting this! When it comes to hydrogen technologies, both economics and technology must go hand in hand. The right coating solution not only needs to deliver on performance and durability but also on cost efficiency to make large-scale adoption viable. Too often we see coating solutions in the brochures that look great on paper but make it extremely difficult to ever hit the required cost targets. We focus on choosing the right technology from the start and ensuring competitiveness in economics. Because in the end, it’s not “either-or” – success requires both.
