Does this street look strange?! You might be surprised to learn that it’s England’s first official “cycle street” in Cambridge 🚲 Where cyclists – and pedestrians – have the main right of way over vehicles And it’s created a heated debate amongst locals 🔥 Not over whether it’s a good or bad idea... But because of arguments over whether: 🚲 It’s truly the 'first' in England 📊 The 3,000 cyclists per day cited in the press release is accurate 💷 Cyclists should now pay road tax, or not 🕳️ The council should have spent the money filling potholes instead And this heated debate strikes me as really rather brilliant… Because it’s *not* about whether this is the way more of our streets should be designed Which I think (and hope) gives permission to our city planners to be a lot bolder in challenging just how much of our city real estate is given over to cars (at the expense of everything else) Apparently this was inspired by the Dutch model, who decades ago asked themselves: --> "How do we make our streets safer, healthier and more pleasant for everyone?" Personally, I'd love to see many more experiments like this Because once you've seen a street designed around people rather than parked cars, it's hard to go back What do you think – is this the future of British streets, or has Cambridge gone too far? 🚲 Thanks to the brilliant daily newsletter The Knowledge, from the team at The Week, for flagging this and the great GIF 🙏 -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? I guess I shouldn’t have been shocked when I saw this on my dog walk But I was 😔 A field being prepared to grow our food Covered in plastic of all shapes and sizes, in every single square metre As far as I could see It made me wonder: how on earth did it get there?!? This can’t be good for our health – let alone the environment 💔 And there's surely a lot more of this to come... Plastic production is set to nearly triple globally by 2060 if governments don’t intervene And 99% of plastic is made from fossil fuels Which means that as demand for oil and gas for energy starts to decline… many fossil fuel companies are betting heavily on plastics as their next growth market 😳 Sometimes these problems feel impossibly big But there *are* things we can do: ✍️ Support organisations campaigning for a #GlobalPlasticsTreaty and stronger regulation – groups like A Plastic Planet, Surfers Against Sewage, Greenpeace UK, Friends of the Earth, Everyday Plastic and the Marine Conservation Society 📣 Write to MPs and ask for stronger action on single-use plastics and producer responsibility 🛒 Reduce unnecessary plastic where we can in our own shopping 💡 Support innovators building alternatives – brilliant companies like Xampla, Notpla, Kelpi, Shellworks and Pulpex who are trying to redesign materials from the ground up And perhaps most importantly, keep refusing to accept this as “just the way things are” Because we *should* be shocked to see a field full of plastic -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? I bet you didn't know this... The colour of your eggs impacts their carbon footprint 🤯 I certainly didn't Thanks to Sterling Crew, I learned that Sainsbury's is phasing out brown eggs in its own-brand range and switching entirely to white eggs Not because they're cheaper Or because consumers prefer them But because white eggs have a 12.7% lower carbon footprint 🥚 Why? Because the white-feathered hens that lay them are smaller, eat less feed and generally have a longer laying life It's one of those wonderfully counterintuitive sustainability stories that reminds us how complex our food system really is! It's also a useful reminder that our instincts aren't always right... Because for years, brown eggs became associated in many people's minds with being more natural, more traditional, maybe even "better" Proof that sustainability is full of surprises 🥚💚 And bravo Sainsbury's (who we're also really proud to work with at Olio • Share More, Waste Less, redistributing their surplus food) -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? 🐈‍⬛ I guess the cat is out of the bag then! I’m writing a book 🥳 Working title: "Simple Swaps" For years I’ve been talking about broken systems But this book is about something much more practical: How ordinary people can live more sustainably… without needing to be perfect, privileged or overwhelmed Essentially it aims to be a guilt-free guide to sustainable living and covers simple swaps (name checking the brands I love) for: 🪥 Toiletries - From toothpaste, dental floss & shampoo, to deodorant, period products, suncream, makeup and more 👗 Fashion - From underwear to sportswear, how to avoid fast fashion traps, buy clothes that last, spot greenwashing, wash your clothes without shedding microplastics everywhere… and why your leggings may contain more fossil fuels than you realised 🍓 Food - How to stop wasting food, eat more plant based, store your herbs properly, understand confusing date labels, batch cook without hating your freezer, and why your fridge layout matters more than you think ✈️ Travel - From trains vs planes to low-waste holidays, and eating sustainably on-the-go 🐶 Pets - From plastic dog toys & poo bags, to pet food, cat litter, flea treatments, and how our furry friends accidentally ended up with carbon footprints too 💸 Finances - How to align your money with your values; from ethical banking & pensions to why your savings account may be funding fossil fuels without you even knowing And lots more! The key takeaway? Making lots of #simpleswaps can make you: 💚 Healthier By reducing exposure to toxic chemicals, eating better, breaking up with plastic, and reconnecting with what actually makes us feel good 💸 Wealthier By buying better, buying less, wasting less food, and escaping the endless cycle of throwaway consumption 😊 Happier Because it feels surprisingly good to be part of the solution instead of the problem The whole idea behind "Simple Swaps" is that small actions matter Especially when millions of us do them together It’s part practical guide Part personal stories from my family's journey to live more sustainably Part exploration of the systems that got us here in the first place And hopefully… part antidote to eco-anxiety too 🌱 Big thanks to Donna Owen at The Engine for having me on the show (do listen to the whole episode) And John Blackburn and Sonny Forbes from Vertical Drop for the fab edit 🎬 Hit them up if you want a beautiful podcasting studio + editing 🔗 Here's a link to sign up to be first to know when it comes out... https://lnkd.in/dVCWFQYy 💬 And LMK what simple swaps you've made in your life Or if there's something you're still battling with... -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? 2006 vs. 2026! Don't laugh (too much)... There's a serious point here: In 20 years, we’ve all changed, BUT... the Companies Act is stuck in the past This #BetterBusinessDay, we’re calling the government to change Section 172, so that all businesses prioritise people, planet and profit I've written to my MP, it took less than 60 seconds Now it's your turn 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eHicPm7m Let's make some noise and upgrade to Better Business by supporting the Better Business Act ♻️ Please repost if you think business should be about more than profit maximisation -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? It’s Earth Day 🌍 And my birthday 🥳 And you know what I’d love most as a birthday gift…? Not cake Not presents But this post being shared far and wide ♻️ (maybe a repost for every year - it's a big milestone birthday 😜) Because preventing #foodwaste is one of the most powerful (and overlooked) climate actions we have Here’s why this matters so much👇 🍽️ ~1/3 of all food produced globally is wasted 🌍 Food waste is responsible for ~8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions 💸 ~$1 trillion worth of food is thrown away every year 🌱 If food waste were a country, it would be the 3rd largest emitter after the US and China ⚖️ In the UK, over HALF of all food waste takes place in the home (!!) And yet this problem is so solvable Not with new tech Not with billion-dollar infrastructure But with simple #behaviourchange at scale Here's what you can do 🥕 Share your spare food at home (there's an app for that 😉) 🏪 If you run a business, sign up to Olio and redistribute your surplus 🗣️ Talk about it - most people still don’t realise the scale of this problem This is one of those rare climate solutions that's: → Immediate → Accessible → Good for people and planet So if you're going to give me one birthday gift today… Please make it this: help more people see that food waste isn’t inevitable It’s fixable ♻️ -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? I genuinely thought paper food packaging was the “good” option 😳 Plastic bad. Paper good. Simple, right? Then I discovered #PFAS A group of so-called “forever chemicals” that apparently are commonly used in paper-based food packaging to make it greaseproof and waterproof 🤯 Think: 🍔 Burger wrappers 🍕 Pizza boxes 🥡 Takeaway containers 🥐 Bakery bags 🥣 Compostable bowls and plates I was sad/shocked in equal measure to discover this Because this is exactly the kind of systems trap that makes sustainability so hard for consumers – and businesses We remove one visible problem… …only to accidentally replace it with a less visible one PFAS chemicals have been linked to: ⚠️ Reproductive issues ⚠️ Immune system disruption ⚠️ Some cancers ⚠️ Environmental contamination that can last for decades What’s especially frustrating is that many food businesses may not even realise these chemicals are in their packaging supply chains, because supply chains are often incredibly fragmented, so critical information like this gets lost Meanwhile many consumers – including me until recently – assume “paper” automatically means safe and sustainable It doesn’t The good news is that regulation is finally starting to catch up... The EU is moving towards restricting PFAS in food contact packaging, and many major brands have already started phasing them out This leaves me with two questions… 1️⃣ When will the UK catch up with the EU?! 2️⃣ Does anyone know of UK-based food packaging suppliers who are genuinely PFAS-free? Espec. for grease-resistant takeaway food packaging, as I'd love to recommend them to Olio • Share More, Waste Less catering partners Feels like this issue is about to become a very big deal very quickly once more people know about it... -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? After 10 years fighting #plasticpollution, Natalie Fée spent a year sitting under an oak tree 🌳 Wind, rain, sun, snow Contemplating, singing, writing Some of you may know Natalie as the inspirational founder of City to Sea - the OG activist pioneer against single-use plastics But after a decade of campaigning, convening, educating and pushing, she took the heartbreaking decision to close the organisation down And what a decade it was 👇 🌊 Helped drive the mainstream movement against single-use plastics 🥤 Instrumental in the rise of refill culture in the UK 🚰 Launched campaigns like Refill which helped millions access free tap water instead of buying plastic bottles 🏛️ Took the fight to Govt and industry long before plastic pollution was headline news 🧠 Educated, inspired and mobilised countless individuals, brands and businesses 💪 Made people believe that behaviour change and systems change could go hand in hand Knowing this incredible backstory - and all the energy, heart and soul Natalie poured into City to Sea - made me realise I’d probably need to sit under a tree for a year just to begin processing it all too And that's something we don’t talk about enough in the impact world: The emotional cost of caring deeply for a very long time Especially when progress is painfully slow Especially when the systems you’re trying to change remain fundamentally broken Especially when you’ve given everything you have The world’s loss of City to Sea is however our gain in terms of Natalie’s music and poetry 🎶 I saw her perform the other weekend and she was *utterly* spellbinding You could feel every year of activism, grief, beauty and love in her voice I highly recommend checking her out - https://nataliefee.com/ And perhaps Natalie’s story is also a reminder to all of us building in climate / sustainability / impact: We are not machines And sometimes the toll is more than one person should have to bear🌳 ♻️ Please repost if you know someone working in sustainability who needs to know they're not alone -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Be boring… If you’re not bored of talking about the problem you’re trying to solve, you probably haven’t talked about it enough And that’s a really common mistake most founders make... They get bored way before their audience does So they move on to new messaging, or the next shiny thing ✨ When actually, repetition is the job I’ll never forget telling my husband that I felt like a stuck record telling the Olio • Share More, Waste Less founding story over and over again. It was starting to feel disingenuous And you know what he said? “How do you think Prince feels performing Purple Rain?” 🎤 In an instant, I got it. It’s my job to say it. Over and over and over again So… in the spirit of practising what I preach And whilst I have your attention 😆 Here’s the problem I’m trying to solve: food waste 🍽️ Around 1/3 of all food produced globally is wasted 💸 That wasted food is worth ~$1 trillion per year 😔 ~800m people go to bed hungry (who could be fed on <¼ of the food we waste in the West) 💧 Food waste uses ~25% of the world’s freshwater supply 🌍 It drives 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and is a major driver of deforestation 🗑️In the UK, 60% of food waste happens in the home, with the average family wasting ~£1,000/year So when you worry you’re sounding like a broken record… Don’t Because it takes a lot of repetition for your main message to land And when it does, people will come to you (rather than you having to chase them) In founder comms, consistency > novelty Every single time Thank you Per Frykebrant for reminding me of this important lesson on the recent Norrsken portfolio webinar 🙏 ♻️ Please repost this so any founders in your network know to channel their inner Prince 💜 -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke 💚 for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? There will come a point where future generations ask: “You knew ecosystems were collapsing… and you carried on anyway?” And I suspect many business leaders will answer much like companies did about slavery or child labour... “It was legal at the time” But legality and morality are not the same thing And right now, destroying entire ecosystems is still largely legal 😳 Which is why I’ve signed the Stop Ecocide International business open letter – calling for ecocide to become an international crime And I’d love to see many more businesses do the same 💪 Because most business leaders I meet are not villains They’re operating inside a broken system So let's work together to change that system... I'm absolutely convinced that making ecocide a crime would fundamentally change boardroom decision-making around the world And that's just the change we need - ASAP If your company believes some things should simply never be acceptable – no matter how commercially convenient – then pls consider signing the open letter 👉 https://lnkd.in/efb6Qvvm Jojo Mehta Sue Miller -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Here's some GREAT news for y'all to start the new week... Scientists have just scrapped the “worst case” climate scenario 🌍 [The one where humanity makes no effort to cut emissions and by 2100 the world would be 4.5°C hotter] Why? Because we've actually started to do something about it 🥳 BUT... This is NOT a “job done” moment 😬 --> Global emissions haven't started to fall yet --> And the most *optimistic* new pathway leads to +1.9°C Nonetheless, I do think the scrapping of the worst pathway is a MAJOR milestone! Because for years many people have internalised the idea that nothing we do makes any difference And that simply isn’t true Action matters The future is not fixed 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eNFtCDe6 ♻️ Please repost to share the great news -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? 🌟 Impact founders - this one's for you... Applications are now open for the Meaningful Business 100 If you're building a business that's creating positive impact at scale, I'd strongly encourage you to throw your hat in the ring I was fortunate enough to be selected as an MB100 winner a few years ago, and it connected me with an incredible community of founders, investors and change-makers And just a few weeks ago I attended one of their events which was genuinely one of the most useful business events I've been to in a long time No panels. No fluff. No endless keynote speeches Just practical, hands-on roundtable discussions with founders openly sharing what's working, what's not, and the lessons they've learned the hard way The quality of conversation was exceptional!! What do you do, when the first version of your product doesn’t work?! 😬 That’s what happened for us at Olio • Share More, Waste Less We were a food sharing app… with no food! But like any founders who are obsessed with solving the problem they’ve set out to solve (for us, food waste) Saasha Celestial-One and I weren’t going to fall at the first hurdle And in fact, some very lateral thinking about how to solve that problem... Has led to what is now the beating heart of Olio: our Food Waste Heroes Programme❤️ Here’s how it works: 📍 Volunteers collect surplus food directly from local businesses (supermarkets, offices, school canteens, hospitals, even TV & film shoots) 📱 They take it home & upload it onto Olio  🤝 Neighbours request and collect it, for free 🛡️ All volunteers are food safety trained, so businesses can trust the system 👥 We now have 100,000+ volunteers across the UK and beyond 🥕 We can take all types of food: from fresh to packaged, and from sandwiches to surplus catering Our experience is a good reminder that your 1st version doesn’t need to be perfect... But your commitment to solving the problem does 💪 If you want to hear more about the Olio • Share More, Waste Less journey & key learnings along the way... BREAKING NEWS: one of the world’s largest fertiliser manufacturers has warned we’re going to be short 10 billion meals per week 🚨 And the poorest countries are going to suffer first This should make us all stop hard, and *really* think Perhaps we'll finally wake up & recognise food waste is an enormous MORAL issue?! We all have a role to play... Yes businesses need to dramatically accelerate their efforts to reduce food waste But here in the UK, it’s actually homes who generate **60%** of the country’s food waste 🏘️ That’s you, and me btw (the avg UK household throws away £1k of food p.a. that could've been eaten) People are going to die So the least we can do is invest a little time and energy to do our bit Because if we all take small actions Together we can actually have an impact 💪 Here are my top tips: 🛒 SHOP with a plan 🥕 STORE your food carefully (e.g. don’t put onions with potatoes) 🍽️ SERVE on smaller plates 🍲 SAVE your leftovers (they’re surprisingly delicious the next few days) 🥤 SMOOTHIE all your old wrinkly fruit & veg with some milk/yoghurt 🤝 SHARE your spare with a neighbour via the Olio • Share More, Waste Less app READ MORE: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/er5NSggP ♻️ Please repost to raise awareness -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? This feels like a bit of a head-above-the-parapet moment 🙈🙈🙈 I’ve just had an opinion piece published in Sustainable Views by the Financial Times 🥳 In it I argue that #capitalism needs to change to meet the moment And it’s hard to shake the feeling I’m being heretical for saying it - certainly in the world of business But given the geopolitical chaos unfolding as we speak it’s clearly time to rethink the current economic model which is based on extract, overproduce & discard Because waste is just one example of something that's been totally normalised, but quickly becoming a luxury we can’t afford The good news is there’s a fantastic blueprint available for businesses... And that’s called the #BCorp movement 2,700 UK companies who give equal weight to people, planet and profit And are outperforming their counterparts on most measures 💪 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eUZng5HW 📰 Have a read and LMK what you think - am I saying the obvious out loud, or should I be burned at the stake?! Are you a #startup that wants to partner with #corporates? Here are the lessons I shared at the 'Climate Corporate Partnership Forum' last week Spoiler: it’s not about having a brilliant solution to a massive problem It’s about understanding how corporates *actually* work Here’s the stuff most founders get wrong 👇 ❌ “We’re a startup” ✅ You’re a technology provider “Startup” = risky, scrappy, under-resourced in corporate-speak 😬 Reframe yourself as a credible solution to a business-critical problem Same company, completely different perception ❌ Sell the problem you care about ✅ Sell the problem they’re measured on If it doesn’t hit their KPIs, it doesn’t exist (so don’t be afraid to ask straight up about their KPIs) And yes… sustainability alone is rarely the KPI ROI, cost, convenience still dominate decision-making ❌ Focus on one champion ✅ Adopt the 'pincer movement' Top-down: founders speaking at events, on podcasts, writing thought leadership Bottom-up: your team selling in to internal teams You need both. As a founder you have to do this, even if you don’t like it ❌ Assume they’re aligned internally ✅ Accept it’s chaos and join the dots The left hand genuinely doesn’t know what the right hand is doing (!) Your job = internal matchmaker The faster you connect people internally, the faster things move ❌ Chase every corporate ✅ Identify leaders vs laggards Leaders want to lead Laggards want proof everyone else is doing it first Don't waste a moment with the laggards ❌ Close the deal → relax ✅ Brace for whiplash Sales cycle can take years (3-8 years in our experience) But the rollout expectation = yesterday And then there’s the bit founders really struggle with… ❌ Expect rational processes ❌ Expect fast decisions ❌ Expect fair payment terms Reality check: ⏳ 90-day payment terms are a killer, but the norm 🧾 Procurement can take months 🧱 Teams are siloed beyond belief 🤷‍♀️ Accountability quickly disappears into “it’s with procurement” So what actually works? ✅ 🎯 Go after discretionary budget first (no approvals = speed) ✅ ⚡ Shrink scope to something deliverable in 1–3 months (again, no approvals = speed) ✅ 🎁 Waive pilot fees if it unlocks momentum (the £xk pilot fee isn’t worth it) ✅ 📣 Stay relentlessly top of mind via speaking, PR etc  ✅ 🏆 Turn every win into a case study + logo ASAP Really great event organised by Sammy Fry and great speaking with John Elkington Carrie Harris and Elisa Moscolin on the panel ♻️ Please repost to help more startups win corporate deals. Welcome to the brand new global "reuse" symbol 👇 I can't decide whether I love it or hate it Not the design - which seems good enough to me It's more whether this is going to be... ✅ Additive - How brilliant to highlight/help teach people how not to create waste in the first place ❌ Confusing - Yet another label, that risks adding to the already far too large set of vaguely recycling looking logos on the back of products Here's the backstory... Last week, a global alliance of businesses, governments, designers and NGOs launched the world's first universal symbol for reuse Its purpose is simple: as refill, returnable and reusable packaging systems emerge around the world, consumers need a simple signal that says: 🔄 This isn't rubbish 🔄 Don't throw it away 🔄 It has another life ahead of it 🤔 What do you think - a good step forward? Or is it sufficiently obvious through product form and other comms that an item is re-usable? 🔗 https://bit.ly/4ocQ0TJ -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? 🔦 Sustainability startup you need to know about – Notpla 🔦 What if the problem with packaging… is that it exists at all? We’ve spent decades trying to make packaging less bad → Recyclable → Compostable → “Eco” But what if the real breakthrough is… no packaging full stop 🤯 I came across Notpla, founded by the brilliant Pierre-Yves Paslier & Rodrigo García González recently and it completely reframed how I think about this space (and no surprise they picked up the £1m Earthshot Prize 🏆) Here’s what you need to know 👇 THE PROBLEM 🔹 Single-use packaging is everywhere – especially in food & drink on-the-go 🔹 Even “sustainable” options still require energy, infrastructure, and behaviour change 🔹 Most packaging exists for minutes… but leaves a footprint for decades THE INSIGHT 💡 Instead of making packaging better… Notpla asked: “what if it simply disappeared?” They’ve developed natural, seaweed-based packaging that you can literally eat – or it biodegrades in weeks No bins No guilt No waste system required THE RESULT 🚀 🌱 Packaging that leaves zero trace 📉 Up to 70% lower GHG emissions vs plastic ♻️ A completely different mental model – from disposal → disappearance WHO THIS REALLY HELPS 👥 • Food brands trying to move beyond greenwashing into real solutions • Cities drowning in on-the-go waste • All of us who’ve ever felt the friction of “doing the right thing” Because the biggest barrier to sustainable behaviour isn’t intention, it’s friction And Notpla have done the hard work to remove it entirely Bravo Notpla 👏 ♻️ Please repost to spread the word about this ingenious packaging solution -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke 💚 for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Sunday was #WorldFoodSafetyDay! 🌍 And as I learned from our amazing food safety advisor, Sterling Crew's post... unsafe food causes 866 million illnesses and 1.5 million deaths annually (source: WHO) 💔 That's why at Olio • Share More, Waste Less we take food safety sooooo seriously With the help of our food safety advisors, we've made redistributing surplus food safe and simple for our business partners: 🍲 The moment our trained Food Waste Heroes collect your food, the responsibility is ours (contractually). So our partners can donate their surplus food with confidence 🤝 We've had a Primary Authority Partnership with South Derbyshire DC since 2017, and an independent regulatory and scientific consultant Sterling Crew regularly reviews our food safety frameworks 📊 Because food is shared via our app, we have a full digital trail of where it ends up - meaning we can act quickly in the event of any product recalls ✅ Every year since, our Food Safety Management System (FSMS) has received Assured Advice, confirming our operations comply with food regulations 🥇 Our Primary Authority partnership won a Local Government Chronicle award in 2025 📅 To date, we've safely redistributed over 150 million meals!! Safe food sharing, sorted Read more here: https://lnkd.in/emUT3Xfb -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? “Meta Employees Vie for AI ‘Token Legend’ Status” That was a headline from The Information last week And it made me feel slightly nauseous 🤢 Because rather than treating #AI like the precious resource we should be (using our limited energy, water etc at a time when both are under pressure, and local communities are protesting data centres being located near their homes) It’s turned into a bragging contest about who can use it the most And the more I read… the worse it got At Meta, employees are literally competing on leaderboards to burn the most tokens, with titles like “Token Legend” and “Session Immortal” 🏆 Basically gamifying the consumption of one of the most resource-intensive technologies ever created Apparently it even has a name now: “tokenmaxxing” 🤮 So here we are… 🌍 In a climate crisis 💧 Water scarcity is rising 🏗️ Communities are pushing back on data centres in their backyards AND YET… 💻 Celebrating maximum AI usage 🏆 Rewarding consumption over efficiency 📣 Treating more compute = more value I’m not anti-AI; far from it, the potential is enormous But we’re at massive risk of building the wrong cultural norms from day one So here's what I'd like to see... Instead of “who used the most tokens?”, what if we celebrated ♻️ Who achieved the most with the least compute ⚡ Who designed the most efficient prompts / systems 🌱 Who reduced resource intensity per task 🧠 Who used AI thoughtfully, not endlessly Because, whether we like it or not, we live in a **resource-constrained** world… And the sooner we face up to that, the better Including you Meta -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke 💚 for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Food waste is responsible for 10% of all global greenhouse gas emissions 🤯 That's more than the entire fashion industry Five times the aviation sector And 60% of it happens in our homes - not supermarkets That's why Olio • Share More, Waste Less exists - and why I'm still just as driven as I was 11 years ago 💪 If you missed my episode with Donna Owen on Founder Stories this week, this clip captures why I do what I do... 🎧 Listen / Watch here: YouTube - https://lnkd.in/einUwZrJ Spotify - https://lnkd.in/e_zjPSbe Apple Podcasts - https://lnkd.in/eQF8yrPZ -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Does the decline in “luxury” mean 'the start of the end'? This thought was triggered by something I read recently that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about... It was an opinion piece in The Business of Fashion by Imran Amed talking about why luxury culture suddenly feels “off” Not because people no longer want beautiful things But because the social contract underneath luxury is starting to fracture He said: “Luxury goods are becoming markers of exclusion rather than totems of aspiration” 🫨 For decades consumer culture has largely worked on one very powerful promise: Work hard enough and one day you too can have this life: the designer bag / watch / holiday / car Luxury functioned as a powerful aspirational tool because people believed the gap was bridgeable But what happens when the gap becomes unbridgeable? When people no longer see wealth as something inspiring… but as a symbol of an economy that no longer feels fair? Management consultancy Bain & Company claims that the luxury industry lost 50 million customers in 2024, mainly from Gen Z And what starts in luxury often becomes a leading indicator for wider cultural change Which makes me wonder whether businesses are perhaps underestimating the scale of what’s happening here 🤔 Because in an age of extreme inequality and ecological instability, ‘conspicuous consumption’ can start to feel less like success… and more like social disconnection I don’t think this means the end of luxury. But maybe it does mean the end of one version of it And perhaps the next era of status won’t be: “look how much I can consume” But instead: “look how lightly, thoughtfully and beautifully I can live” Perhaps I'm living in hope (!) but if status itself is being redefined then the implications for brands - and perhaps capitalism itself - are enormous Discuss... -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Be boring… I’ll never forget telling my husband that I felt like a stuck record telling the Olio • Share More, Waste Less founding story over and over again. It was starting to feel uncomfortable & disingenuous And you know what he said? “How do you think Prince feels performing Purple Rain?” 🎤 In an instant, I got it. It’s my job to say it. Over and over and over again. And to perform it like it's the first time, every single time If you’re not bored of talking about the problem you’re trying to solve, you probably haven’t talked about it enough And that’s a really common mistake most founders make... They get bored way before their audience does So they move on to new messaging, or the next shiny thing ✨ When actually, repetition is the job So… in the spirit of practising what I preach And whilst I have your attention 😆 Here’s the problem I’m trying to solve: food waste 🍽️ Around 1/3 of all food produced globally is wasted 💸 That wasted food is worth ~$1 trillion per year 😔 ~800m people go to bed hungry (who could be fed on <¼ of the food we waste in the West) 💧 Food waste uses ~25% of the world’s freshwater supply 🌍 It drives 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and is a major driver of deforestation 🗑️In the UK, 60% of food waste happens in the home, with the average family wasting ~£1,000/year So when you worry you’re sounding like a broken record… Don’t Because it takes a lot of repetition for your main message to land And when it does, people will come to you (rather than you having to chase them) In founder comms, consistency > novelty Every single time -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Could this be how we *finally* phase out #fossilfuels… without #COP? Because this weekend something really exciting is happening 👀 46 countries (including major oil producers) are attending a fossil fuel phase-out summit in Colombia 🥳 This makes me feel genuinely hopeful, and raises a big question: --> Do we need unanimous global agreement… --> Or just a critical mass of countries willing to move first? For years, the COP process has been like this: 🤝 190+ countries in a room 🐌 Decisions by consensus (pulled down to the least ambitious) 🧊 Emissions continuing to go up & up But this “coalition of the willing” approach has the potential to flip that model on its head: 🔥 Move fast with those ready to act 🌍 Create momentum (and pressure) from the outside 💰 Shift capital flows before global consensus exists Crucially… It includes countries you wouldn’t expect i.e. oil producers themselves (e.g. Canada, Australia, Brazil, Norway) What happens next is key: 👉 Will this group set clear, binding timelines? 👉 Will capital markets follow their lead? 👉 Will others be forced to join… or risk being left behind? Because if this works, it could be *amazing* From:  “Wait for everyone” To:  “Start with the willing, and let momentum do the rest” Keeping all fingers and toes crossed for positive outcomes 🤞 🤞 🤞 Read more here - https://lnkd.in/eUdwkDyq -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Want to know if you’ve got what it takes to be a successful #founder?!? Not in terms of experience/expertise But in terms of fundamentally who you are & how you show up Check out this free test from leading venture capital investor EQT Group It takes 3 mins to take And sample of one, it seems to work well 😜 But a few tips before you take it: 👉 Go with your instinct 👉 Don’t overthink it 👉 Be honest – not the “idealised LinkedIn version” of yourself What I found fascinating… EQT claim that 🧠 Six core traits predict founder success 📊 Only ~85 people in a million naturally score highly across all six 🔑 And one of those traits fundamentally shapes how you develop the others Which explains a lot… Why some founders scale fast, while others struggle despite “perfect” experience 🔗 Take the test now - https://thefoundersix.com/ ♻️ Please repost to share with any actual/aspiring entrepreneurs in your network -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke 💚 for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? 20 years, same system? Upgrade to Better Business now The Companies Act is stuck in 2006 Since then, business has modernised and now Section 172* must too It’s better for all of us, our economy and our planet I've written to my MP, it took less than 60 seconds Now it's your turn... Let's make some noise and upgrade to Better Business by calling for the Better Business Act Write to your MP - https://lnkd.in/eHicPm7m * Section 172 is the bit that's widely interpreted to mean that the primary responsibility of company directors is to maximise the performance of the biz to the benefit of the shareholders -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Is it all of us causing our fashion problem? Or just some of us? I thought it was the former But it turns out, it’s the latter… New data shows that just 27% of UK shoppers are responsible for half of all clothing purchases This group - so-called “high intensity shoppers” - are buying: 👗 At least 2 items a month (24 a year) 👗 On average ~5.5 items a month 👗 And for luxury shoppers? Closer to 7 items a month Which means a relatively small group is driving a disproportionate amount of demand When I heard this I realised that fashion starts to look a lot less like food And a lot more like flying - a behaviour where a minority drives the majority of impact ✈️ Why does this matter? Because it fundamentally changes how we think about solutions For years, we’ve defaulted to: 👉 “We all need to do a bit better” 👉 “Everyone should just buy less” And yes… broadly true (I’m a big fan of Tiffanie Darke’s “Rule of 5”) But it's also a bit blunt Because when behaviour is this skewed, blanket messaging can miss the mark So what might a more targeted approach look like? 🎯 Focus on the highest-frequency shoppers Not with shame, but with smarter nudges, incentives, and friction 🎯 Rethink business models If growth depends on a small group over-consuming, that’s a structural problem, not just a consumer one 🎯 Policy that reflects reality Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), circularity taxes, etc - but designed with actual behaviour patterns in mind Worth also bearing in mind that this “high intensity” behaviour doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s been: 💸 Engineered through ultra-fast fashion cycles 📲 Supercharged by social media trends 🚚 Enabled by frictionless delivery & returns So while individuals play a role… the system is doing a lot of the heavy lifting For me, the big takeaway is this: Not all sustainability problems are created equal --> Some require *mass behaviour change* (like food waste) --> Others require *precision targeting* of the heaviest users (like fashion… and flying) And if we get that wrong, we risk designing solutions that feel good, but don’t move the needle Read more: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/evCyDZNZ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eRC6KZAN -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? You don’t need a full life reset to feel better… Sometimes you just need a free weekend and a bag of stuff to let go of 🧺 As we head into the final weekend of May, a little reminder: Decluttering isn’t just good for your home… it’s good for your head too 💭 Over the past few weeks, we’ve been partnering with The Mental Health Foundation 💙 And it’s been a powerful reminder of something we see every day at Olio • Share More, Waste Less: Small actions = real impact Our community tells us: ✨ ¾ feel sharing has improved their mental health 🤝 ⅔ have made new friends through the app Not from big, dramatic changes But from simple acts of giving, connecting, and showing up So if you’ve got a spare hour this weekend… 🧺 Clear out that cupboard / drawer / “stuff” corner (hello toiletries/books etc) 📱 Share a few items on Olio 💬 Maybe even meet someone new in your local area Because what’s clutter to you… Could be exactly what someone else needs Especially when so many are having such a tough time 💚 -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? #Mentalhealth doesn’t just come from therapy or time off… Sometimes it starts with something much simpler 💭 Like sharing what you don’t need As we head into #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek (11–17 May), I’m so proud that Olio • Share More, Waste Less has partnered with The Mental Health Foundation 💙 Because the connection between community, generosity and mental health is real And we see it every day at Olio... Our research shows: ✨ ¾ of Olio-ers say sharing has improved their mental health 🤝 ⅔ say they’ve made friends through the app Think about that for a moment… An app designed to reduce waste Also helping people feel less isolated, more connected, and more supported That’s the power of community (and shows that what's good for the planet is so often good for us too) So this week, if you’re looking for a small, meaningful action... 🧺 Share something you no longer need 💬 Say hello to someone new 💙 Donate to The Mental Health Foundation via the app Because looking after our mental health doesn’t always require big gestures Sometimes it’s as simple as showing up for each other Declutter your space Feel the difference 💚 -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? “Build it and they will come”... … doesn’t work This is especially problematic for #purpose driven founders, whose work the world so desperately needs 😢 Which is why investing time building your personal LinkedIn brand (not your company’s) is one of the most valuable investments you can make I started in earnest last spring  And have directly experienced the impact in terms of inbound partnership enquiries for Olio • Share More, Waste Less 💪 🚀 I was *super* uncomfortable about it at first, but then I realised it isn’t a “nice to have”... it’s "part of the job", so I made myself go all in And all was going swimmingly well until... 📉 In late 2025, LinkedIn changed the rules → Organic reach dropped by up to 50% for many people And most impact founders haven’t adapted Which, frankly, we can’t afford right now That’s why I’m sharing this 👇 **A free, updated 2026 LinkedIn Growth Blueprint from Dan Sherrard-Smith** Already downloaded by 4,000+ founders and professionals What I like about it is that it’s practical No fluff Just a clear breakdown of what changed - and how to fix it 💡 Including: → How the algorithm actually works now → Why your content might be reaching the wrong people → What to do differently to build real visibility (not vanity metrics) And a REALLY important stat… LinkedIn is now one of the most cited sources (after Reddit) when people use AI tools to find experts So if you care about building something meaningful You also need to care about being seen You can download it here: https://lnkd.in/evD2nme8 🎁 Bonus: you’ll also get access to a free live 3-day workshop (20–22 April) ♻️ Please repost so this can reach as many purpose-driven professionals as possible -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke 💚 for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Two of the most important lessons from my entrepreneurial journey with Olio • Share More, Waste Less have nothing to do with product, fundraising or growth... 1️⃣ Protect your mental health at all costs Building a startup is a constant cycle of highs and lows One week you're celebrating a breakthrough The next you're dealing with a setback that feels existential What I've learned is that the downs **never last forever** But when you're in the middle of a difficult period, it's easy to convince yourself that things will always be this way. However in my experience, time and again, something unexpected has appeared around the corner 🌞 Resilience isn't about never feeling discouraged. It's about remembering that today's reality is not tomorrow's destiny 💪 2️⃣ Be religious about your mission, but agnostic about your solution Your mission is your North Star The way you achieve it is simply a hypothesis And one of the biggest mistakes I've seen founders make is to fall in love with their solution... and ignore the deafening feedback from the market telling them that that particular solution doesn't work Links to the full episode of my conversation with Paul Miller OBE from Bethnal Green Ventures here: * Youtube- https://lnkd.in/enr3qdku * Spotify - https://lnkd.in/e4KQeUsW * Apple podcast- https://lnkd.in/eNQeDvjF -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities? Have we in sustainability been selling the wrong things? I think so 😬 In this article for Environmental Business Outlook I argue that environmental consultancies in particular need to STOP selling sustainability... and START selling survival Because sustainability feels like a "nice to have" Whereas "survival" is essential: 🌡️ Extreme weather disrupting supply chains 🌾 Resource scarcity driving up costs 🏢 Buildings, infrastructure and assets exposed to climate risk 📈 Insurance costs rising fast & in some places unavailable altogether This means climate change has graduated from being 'just' an environmental issue, to becoming a business continuity issue It makes me weep that it's taking this to get us to collectively wake up But better late than never, as they say What do you think? 👇 https://lnkd.in/e2S5Pjer -------------------------------------- Follow Tessa Clarke for more straight talking on sustainability & scaling startups  ♻️ Please repost if this could help your network 🖐️ Wish your company redistributed its surplus food to local communities?
