When you dare to dream, people will call you ‘weird’. They may call you ‘wild’. Sometimes, they’ll even call you both. I take it as a compliment that I’m such an enigma to so many. I dare you to be as fucking ‘weird’ and ‘wild’ as you can in 2023 and beyond. Fortune favors the bold… And, my DJ name isn’t Mr. Bold for nothing. On Saturday, I was awarded my black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from Carlos Gracie Jr. and my Professor Alexandre Ogawa… in front of many of the best BJJ practitioners in the world… and, in the homeland of Brazil. It was a culminating moment, 22 years (and 6,133 miles to get there) in the making. Truth be told, I didn’t know if this day would come. I’ve been a brown belt since 2010. Since then, I’ve battled through injury after injury, numbing depression, and addiction. But, I’ve stayed with it. Jiu Jitsu has never come easy for me. I’m not particularly fast. I’m not particularly strong. I’ve competed in three tournaments and have never scored a point. I didn’t know I had dyslexia until it became clear that moves which require more than a few steps are beyond my pay grade. 😂 Occasionally, I still get tapped by a skilled blue belt. Purple, brown and black? All the time. Hell, I’ve been tapped so many times throughout my Jiu Jitsu journey my nickname should be ‘keg’. But I’ve stayed with it. It is an honor, and I am humbled, to join one of the rarest groups of men and women on the planet — a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It has been far from a smooth path to arrive at this moment. There have been more times than I care to admit that I didn’t want to train. And, often, my weaker self got the better of me. Staying away from the mats for six months here, a year or two there… these stints happened far too often over the past 2+ decades. And yet, inevitably, the mats have always called me back home. Over this time, I’ve watched countless peers persevere and receive varying degrees of their black belts. Some have opened their own schools. And while I’m so proud of them for their achievements, there certainly are times when those images deepened my depression rather than inspired me. But, I’ve stayed with it. The pride I feel in receiving this belt is only surpassed by that of knowing that my beautiful wife of over 25 years, Lena, has been with me every step of the way. This belt is as much hers as it is mine. This is turning into a bit of a novel so I’ll wrap with this… A friend of mine once shared a quote that has stuck with me for years: “If you want a hard life… do the easy things. If you want an easy life… do the hard things.” I’m not even going to try and pretend — learning and practicing Jiu Jitsu has ALWAYS been hard for me. There is no such thing as an ‘easy’ class. As a former coach often reminded me, “This isn’t ballet.” For sure it’s not. BJJ has a unique way of weeding out folks who aren’t up to the challenge. I have watched literally THOUSANDS of men and women start and then quit Jiu Jitsu over the years. But, I’ve stayed with it. And I take great pride in saying so because staying with it continues to make my life EASIER in so many ways. Let the learning begin. OSS!

How to lose $887 MILLION. Everyone, even the best of the best, sometimes make poor business decisions or bet on the wrong horse. Professional money lost $887 MILLION (and counting) on the FTX debacle. Notable institutional venture firms like Sequoia Capital, Paradigm, and SoftBank, have marked down their $278M, $214M, and $100M investments, respectively, to zero. Singapore's sovereign wealth fund Temasek and Canadian pension fund, the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund, had invested over $200M and $95M into FTX, respectively. Sure, you can continue to beat yourself up over things that didn’t play out. Or, you can choose to play a bigger game. If these companies can afford to lose that much money and barely bat an eye, imagine how many zeros you could add to your bottom line if you chose to shoot higher. #business #money #crypto

Yesterday, Stephen 'tWitch' Boss died by suicide. You may recognize him as the DJ on 'Ellen' or from 'So You Think You Can Dance'. You’ll see posts about his suicide all day long. Mostly from people who have no idea what depression feels like and how living with depression is not a choice, but something that is ingrained in our beings. They’ll (with all the right intentions) say that you should “check in” on people you love, or those who may be depressed. They’ll talk about how sad it is that he took his life and how life is so short and precious. They talk about how on the surface he “had it all“ and wonder how could someone like that be so unhappy. They’ll look at pictures of him and his family and wonder how someone with such a ‘beautiful life’ could do this. And they will absolutely mean every word. They may even cry. They may legitimately be sad. But it’s impossible for someone who isn’t depressed to truly understand what it’s like… To be on the verge of crying for absolutely no reason at any given moment To be in the middle of something beautiful, and be overwhelmed by negative thoughts To have the constant chatter of negativity and pessimism, when there’s absolutely no reason to To smile and be happy with every fiber of your being, and then the next moment, be ready to end at all. So yes… Absolutely check in on those you love. Regardless of whether or not, they’re depressed. They’ll love hearing from you. But at the end of the day, when you suffer from depression, it’s an every day battle that only the person suffering from it can decide whether or not it’s a war they can win. And hopefully those who are playing this loser-takes-all game, continue the fight. #tWitch #suicide #life #depression #people

Depression… and December. (Heads up - this post may be triggering for both those with, and without, depression.) Yesterday, I shared my thoughts on tWitch’s suicide from the perspective of someone who also suffers from depression. (To be clear, that would be me. I’ll say this as clearly as possible… I struggle with depression.) December is especially tough for those afflicted. Why? For many reasons. Reasons those who aren’t afflicted can’t comprehend. For starters… We’re taught from a young age that this is “the most wonderful time of the year.” (Spoiler alert - when you suffer from depression, it’s the absolute worst time of the year.) We’re conditioned to engage in, accept and embrace “holiday cheer.” (Those who are suffering struggle to get out of bed, let alone feel ‘cheery’ about anything.) The endless office parties, family get-togethers, ‘celebrations’ with friends. (In our hearts, we’d love to be there and are glad we’re invited. But the pressure to attend, put on a happy face and socialize can be excruciating. However, we don’t want to say no because turning down the invitation potentially leads to NOT be invited to the next one… that’s even worse and can lead to a serious downward spiral.) Strangers wishing us ‘happy holidays!’ and best wishes for a ‘happy new year.’ (While we’d never say this aloud, it’s not unusual for someone who is depressed to respond with a good ol fashioned ‘go fuck yourself’ in their head.) So, what can you do in this month of ‘joy’ for those you love who are depressed? Let me start with what NOT to do. Don’t tell them to ‘talk to someone’, see a shrink, etc. Don’t suggest that they consider getting on meds. Don’t encourage them to be grateful for all the ‘wonderful’ things they have in their life. The best thing to do? Exactly what you’d normally do. Call them on the schedule you’d normally call them. Go to lunch or dinner with them as you normally would. Play the sports and games with them as you normally would. Give them a hug or a high-five as you normally would. And, just be there for them… as you normally would. Eventually, we’ll talk. Eventually, we’ll share. Eventually, we’ll get through the wave. Or, we won’t. And, as much as you want to help, if we don’t want to be helped, all the prodding, pushing, encouragement and advice in the world isn’t going to magically change things for us. Yeah… it sucks that you can’t help us to turn the corner and see the world as you do. We wish we could turn the corner too. We don’t ‘choose’ to be depressed. Please know that I’m not writing this to elicit sympathy. This post is meant to provide perspective on why amazing people do unthinkable things For those suffering from depression, I know that December can be a real mother fucker. Stay strong. One breath at a time. Ride the wave. Tomorrow may not necessarily be better, but let’s find out. 🙏 #love #twitch #holidays #december #suicide #depression

When Podcast Magazine put Jordan Belfort (The Wolf of Wall Street) on the cover and shared his story... people complained. When we put Paris Hilton on the cover and shared her story... people complained. We'd run both again... without hesitation. However, when we chose not to feature Jay Shetty because of concerns over plagiarism, we didn't care whether or not people would complain. We were concerned with holding to OUR standards, and holding to the level of integrity that is non-negotiable for US. If more organizations created their own standards and identified their own non-negotiables backlash, or lack thereof, would render itself irrelevant. (PS - Podcast Movement is the conference referenced.) (PPS - We’d put Ben Shapiro on the cover tomorrow. @officialbenshapiro you in?) #podcast #conference #benshapiro #jordanbelfort #podcastmagazine #people #hilton #paris

In less than two weeks, I'll be sitting down with Ben Shapiro for a Podcast Magazine cover feature. Ben hosts the 7th most listened to podcast IN THE WORLD. If you had an opportunity to ask Ben one question, what would it be? Should be a VERY interesting interview. When we launched Podcast Magazine 2 1/2 years ago, I had a solid feeling we'd take the podcast world by storm. In the last 2 months, I'll have sat down with 2 of the top 7 podcasters (by monthly downloads). Pretty darn cool if I may say so myself. Perhaps this interview will represent the tipping point for the magazine. Time will tell. #podcast #interview #podcastmagazine

18-0. His score… 18. Mine… 0. A complete shut out and beat down. Was he bigger? Yes. Younger? A bit. No excuses here. He handed my ass to me left, right and center. I’ve definitely got work to do on my game… and I will. On the plus side, he couldn’t submit or tap me (get me to ‘give up’) and I fought until the final bell. Proud of my performance? Not really, though in watching the footage, he dominated the fight and relentlessly attacked/threw everything at me. I certainly did bend. I didn’t break. From that, I do take pride. For days, including today, the butterflies were real. Once I touched the mats… they disappeared. So many lessons in this I’ve lost count. Perhaps what I’m most proud of is that my 19 year old Isaiah competed for the first time. He too was nervous… felt the fear and did it anyway. He put forth a solid performance against a 35 year old (!) and though he lost 7-0, he made it to the final bell without being submitted or tapping out. Best of all, neither of us was hurt and we’ll both live to fight another day. I did earn a silver medal as there were only two of us in my division. Feels a bit more like a ‘participation trophy’ than a medal ‘earned’, but as my coach said, “getting off the couch and onto the mats IS the victory.” Perhaps in a bit I’ll feel better about my efforts. For now, I’ll savor the day I was able to spend with a handful of my teammates and, most importantly, my wife and our boys. Their support and love is the real victory.

Bravo Family Mortuary Grand Opening July 1! (4-9pm) It’s been quite the journey to get here… finding the right building (with the right zoning!), putting financing in place, closing, working with the architect to design the space, lining up the right GC, getting through Covid and construction, receiving final sign off from the City, getting approval/our license from the State, and now working on the last legs of interior decor… nearly three years later… We’re alllmmmmoooosssttt ready to open San Diego’s newest mortuary, Bravo Family Mortuary. So proud of my wife Lena Bravo-Olsher for her vision, perseverance and patience! Come join us and celebrate our opening. July 1 from 4-9pm. We’re located in Mission Valley at 4427 Rainier Avenue. We’d love to have you here. No RSVP needed. #funeral #mortuary #bravo #bravofamilymortuary #sandiego #missionvalley

Last week, we dropped our November issue of Podcast Magazine featuring Ben Shapiro and Jeremy Boreing of The Daily Wire. We have not issued an apology for doing so. Nor will we ever. To be clear, featuring Ben does not translate to Podcast Magazine supporting transphobia. Our magazine platforms A LOT of people with myriad opinions. In no way do we agree with everything those featured say. We DO however support the rights of podcasters to share their message through the medium we ❤️ regardless of if our personal viewpoints align with theirs. #podcast #share #people #magazine

The end of an era... Podcast Magazine (and our related assets) is for sale After nearly three years of publishing Podcast Magazine each and every month, 13 years as a podcaster, and 10+ years as a coach/event host/online course creator, I've decided it's time for me to move in a different direction. As you may know, my wife and I opened a funeral home in San Diego. This, combined with my renewed focus on the family, music, my mental health and real estate, has led me to make this difficult decision. What does this mean for you? Well... if you're part of 'my world', hopefully, we'll stay connected through social media or other channels. If you're a subscriber to the magazine, it means that our November/December holiday issue was our last issue... for now. Why, for now? Because, we're putting the magazine, and our related assets, up for sale. As a matter of fact, we're putting EVERYTHING we have up for sale. THIS IS A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME O-P-P-O-R-T-U-N-I-T-Y FOR THE RIGHT PERSON/COMPANY... We've done ALL of the legwork -- built the brand, email list, social following, app, website and more -- and created the podcast industry's leading publication and media brand. All you have to do is step in and you'll be ready to dominate the podcast landscape. Interested? Keep reading. You're still here, so I'm sure your natural next question is how are we conducting the sales process and what is the asking price? The short answer is... By offer submission and there is NO asking price. Rather than put a specific price on the components available, we believe that you, as a member of our community, are best suited to determine the respective value of each asset. Here are the assets available: Podcast Magazine - mailing list of 31,000+, trademark, website with 670+ articles, app, logo, Rolodex of industry contacts, social media following (40,000+), PodcastMagazine.com domain, back catalog ClubPod (Clubhouse) - largest podcast 'club' on Clubhouse with 71,000+ members, website, domain, logo (www.ClubPod.club) The Hot 50 Countdown - monthly chart of top podcasts as voted on by podcast fans, trademark, domain, logo, 34 past monthly charts, voting mechanism Icon Maker – trademark, process, brand, copy, logo -- Yearlong, high-ticket coaching program based on the Icon Maker Blueprint Profiting From Podcasts – domain, course material, logo -- 9 Module course The Ultimate Directory of Podcasters - mailing list of 20,000+, brand, back catalog, domain (Continues in comments)

I didn’t post this picture from Sunday’s Jiu-Jitsu tournament because, truth be told, I felt embarrassed to do so. There were two of us in our division. I got demolished in our match 18-0. By default, I placed 2nd and questioned whether or not I actually ‘earned’ that silver medal. So, why post the photo now? Because I’ve had a bit of time to reflect and here’s what I now know to be true… There are hundreds, if not thousands, of 50+ year old brown belts who ‘could’ have competed on Sunday, but chose not to. While I have no clue how I would have fared against them, I chose to compete. Sure, my opponent got the better of me today. But, I got the better of those who chose not to show up. #bjj #jiujitsu #brazilianjiujitsu #gracie #graciebarra #graciebarrasandiego #life #learning

Being depressed isn’t a choice… Over the last week, after I shared about my battles with depression, I have received a number of beautiful notes from people who either suffer from the affliction, or have lost someone they love to the disease. I’ve also received notes from people with ‘helpful suggestions’ on how to make life better and “snap out of the funk“. While the suggestions are appreciated, unless you have directly struggled with depression (and, ideally, overcome it), I’d recommend holding off on lending your ‘expertise.’ For example, unless you are a Jew, you have no business offering suggestions to someone who is Jewish on how to handle antisemitism. Unless you’re black, you have no business offering suggestions to someone who is on how to deal with African-American directed racial profiling or harassment. Unless you’re part of the LGBTQ community, you have no business offering suggestions to someone who is on how to handle LGBTQ-directed bigotry. Allow me to try and make this as clear as possible… Being depressed and struggling with depression is not something we’ve asked for. We’re also not asking for unsolicited advice as to what we ‘need’ to do. If you’re serious about helping, the absolute best thing you can do to support someone who is depressed is… Wait for it… LISTEN In the same manner that you’ve read this post in silence, and hopefully processed the words you have read, you can do the same for those you love who are struggling. Believe it or not, your silence and attention is ultimately the exact medicine we need. And, THAT Is something you’re fully qualified to offer. 🙏 #depression #mentalhealth #twitch #life #love #december

With all the buzz around Web3, crypto currency, etc., one of the biggest opportunities available right now in this emerging landscape for coaches, authors, speakers and business owners is... HAVING YOUR OWN COIN/TOKEN. The easiest path to making this happen is having a 'Creator Coin'. We have our own coin, $BOLD, which trades on Rally.io and has been 'live' for ~ 1 year. Recently, I sat down with Michael Stelzner of Social Media Marketing World for his new show, the Crypto Business Podcast. During our 45-minute conversation, I break down (in detail) the benefits of having your own coin, ideas for how coaches, authors, speakers, and business owners can leverage the power of their own coin, and how having your own coin can best position you at the leading edge of your industry as the business world transitions from Web2 to Web3. Check out our interview via the link below: "Creator Coins: Why and How They Work for Business with Michael Stelzner on the Crypto Business Podcast at Social Media Examiner. https://lnkd.in/gnkysAgK... Ugg. This one hurts. Was there with him when he was ‘Robocop’. Still can hear Carlson Gracie Sr calling him ‘robo cop ay’. Managed him for the first 6 years of his career. Housed him in one of our apartments when he needed a place to live. So strong when we rolled. So much better at Jiu Jitsu than most realize. Few know that his first contract fight after being awarded his ‘6-figure’ deal was $2k to show, $4k to win. Didn’t matter, he always fought like he was being paid a million for it. RIP amigo.

Why ChatGPT is worth looking at… 1. ChatGPT is a product created by OpenAI, an organization formed by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others in 2015. It raised $1 billion from Microsoft in 2019 and is currently valued at around $20 billion. 2. OpenAI is also the company behind DALL-E, the deep learning generative art program whose creations have gone viral thousands of times. 3. ChatGPT has now gone viral and reached 1 million users in just 5 days. For context, here’s how long it took other products to reach 1 million users: Netflix - 41 months Twitter - 24 months Facebook - 10 months Instagram - 2.5 months 4. It can eliminate hours of research, sort through millions of data points, and even write research papers. 5. And it can do something no other search engine has been able to do before: Take in information and form coherent opinions about topics that require nuanced thinking. Here are a few incredible use cases people have discovered: A. Learning. Imagining having a world-class expert in every subject available to chat with at any time. B. Debugging code. C. A personal assistant. D. Investment research. ChatGPT can do the legwork of putting together an investment thesis. 6. ChatGPT makes it much easier to find information instantly. With Google, you often have to sort through information to find the “right” answer, skipping over search results that are engineered by marketers to show up on the first page. ChatGPT does all of that for us. 7. It can do it all for a couple of cents per query. Compare that to a human who can maybe handle a few requests per hour. The above is fully credited to Genevieve Roch-Decter. I’ve just started playing with it and the results are promising. As always, DYOR. #chatgpt #tech #technology #ai
