This #WorldPolioDay, I’m thinking about how far we’ve come—and how close we are to ending polio for good. Thanks to the determination of health workers, parents, community leaders, and global partners like Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Rotary International, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, cases of wild poliovirus have dropped by 99.9%. Today, wild poliovirus is found only in a few areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. This progress didn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of years of commitment, creativity, and trust built at every level. Now, with better tools like the new oral polio vaccine and stronger surveillance systems, we have what we need to finish the job—if we keep working together. In December, Mohamed bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity will bring global leaders together in the UAE to renew support for eradication. 🌍 In 2024, a global milestone: Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and partners helped protect more than 72 million children from preventable diseases like measles, polio, and diphtheria. 💉 This progress is powered by the dedication of health workers, community leaders, and country governments strengthening routine immunization systems — even in conflict-affected and hard-to-reach areas. Every dose delivered represents a child with the chance to grow up healthy and thrive. 🚸 Still, millions of children remain unreached.
