This #WorldPolioDay, I’m thinking about how far we’ve come—and how close we are to ending polio for good.
Thanks to the determination of health workers, parents, community leaders, and global partners like Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Rotary International, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, cases of wild poliovirus have dropped by 99.9%. Today, wild poliovirus is found only in a few areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
This progress didn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of years of commitment, creativity, and trust built at every level. Now, with better tools like the new oral polio vaccine and stronger surveillance systems, we have what we need to finish the job—if we keep working together.
In December, Mohamed bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity will bring global leaders together in the UAE to renew support for eradication. It’s a rare opportunity to make history and ensure every child, everywhere, grows up free from polio. https://lnkd.in/dhmimW4d
