It’s been over a year since I was laid off along with a huge wave of 7k+ talented coworkers. So, what have I been up to for the past year? ⏳
Short answer, I have been taking care of my family that includes two little kids, a supportive husband, and myself.
After being laid off, I interviewed nonstop for four months, before getting burnt out. Given the current job market conditions, I decided to take some time back to focus on my family and myself for a bit, but those who know me, know that my brain just won’t stop. 😆
So last summer, I hung out with my kids, got Lasik surgery (highly recommended! 👀 ), attended a transcendental Vipassana silent retreat 🧘♀️, and ended the year working on losing the extra 30 pounds from my pregnancy (I’m now down to losing the last 5 pounds 💪 ), and went back to one of my passions in education, by tutoring Math part time. This year, I took care of our big real estate portfolio and tripled the profit, managing it while researching new revenue streams. I did extensive research for an Airbnb, including customer market research, profitability analysis, bit the bullet, and acquired one.
I then learned how to best furnish it. In brief, the furniture needs to have durability, good performance, and be easily replaceable. (Oddly enough, this is also what makes a good employee 😛 )
Long story short, we’ve been on the market for two months, and our Airbnb has not disappointed. I'm also in the process of adding a 5th language to my repertoire, French 🇫🇷 🥐
Yes, I will eventually go back to corporate work. In the meantime, I’m thoroughly enjoying and making the most out of this time while the market is crazy and not favorable for employees. I will also eventually take a *real* time off to wind down. 😁
