Six key factors, or STEPPS, drive all sorts of things to catch on. It's not about B2B vs. B2C. It's not about expensive things vs. cheap ones. It's about the science underlying word of mouth. How can you more effectively talk with your hands? (Research just conditionally accepted at JMR) People often move their hands when communicating, but might certain types of movements be more impactful? Automated video analysis and large multimodal model (LMM) application on thousands of videos (+ experiments) find that: - Moving your hands more boosts communication’s impact - But, illustrators (gestures that visually depict what is being said) are particularly beneficial - They make the content easier to understand and make speakers seem more competent w/ Luca Cascio Rizzo and Mi Zhou Paper here: https://lnkd.in/eYm8jQRx

It's easy to be angry, to be outraged by some of the things going on in the world today. And it can be equally easy to see the other side as radically different. But it turns out we all have the same moral mind, and Kurt Gray's new book help explains why. Powerful insights that will change how you see the world (and hopefully make you a little less frustrated).

🚨 NEW RESEARCH 🚨 Words shape everything from what consumers buy to social interactions. But when during an ad, interaction, or other discourse do particular words or phrases have a more positive (or negative) impact? Is it better to be warm at the beginning of social interactions, for example, or the middle? When are first person pronouns more useful? And how does when service agents use different language shape customer satisfaction? This paper provides a new method to answer such questions. https://lnkd.in/eQ-3rWBR Analysis of hundreds of service conversations, for example, shows when warm and competent language are more effective.

Why is change so hard? The status quo bias often holds us back. "We've always don it that way..." "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." To change minds and drive action, we have to remove the barriers to change. http://bit.ly/1oA8DL2

NEW research accepted at the Journal of Marketing Research How does experience shape confidence? And choice? Consumers are constantly gaining experience in different areas of life. But how does that experience impact their confidence in that domain? And their subsequent choices? Using computational linguistics and machine learning, we analyzed 3.7 million reviews, tracking the purchase histories of nearly 100,000 consumers over almost 30 years. Across various domains (e.g., wine, beer, and cosmetics), confidence doesn’t increase linearly, instead, it follows a U-shape: 📉 Initially, experience DECREASES confidence. As consumers start trying wines, beers, or cosmetics, they realize how much they don’t know – a phase we call “metacognitive recalibration.” 📈 With even more experience, however, confidence rebounds and eventually increases as consumers gain more knowledge.   Further, when consumers feel uncertain, they’re more likely to: ▪️Pick a different product ▪️Wait longer to repurchase from the same brand ▪️Switch brands altogether – and 50% never return   Link to paper: https://lnkd.in/eRMgVWm6 w/ Matt Rocklage and Reihane Boghrati

Great example from champion quiz bowl team about how to avoid groupthink. "Teams are given about 15 seconds for a quiet huddle about those bonus questions. Mr. Blackwell proposed a rule to his teammates about how to confer during matches: The person with the most expertise was not allowed to speak first. That way, the nonexperts would get a chance to offer an idea, which they might otherwise have kept to themselves."
