Most founders still think they’re selling to people.
They’re not. They’re selling into an environment where AI has already shaped what their customer sees, trusts, and believes before they ever enter the conversation.
That shift is bigger than most people realize.
In this episode of The Vault Unlocked, I sat down with Mark Schaefer to unpack what’s actually happening beneath the surface. Not from a tools or tactics perspective, but from a behavioral one.
What happens when customers stop researching and start defaulting to AI for answers? Not just for low-risk decisions, but for where they live, who they trust, and what they buy.
It raises a deeper question that most founders aren’t ready to confront:
“If AI can do everything better than me, what’s left for me?”
The instinct is to move faster, produce more content, and automate everything. But that approach misses the point.
When AI becomes the filter between you and your customer, performance marketing doesn’t scale the same way. Visibility is no longer just earned through output.
What starts to matter instead is brand, trust, and human signal.
Because at that point, the real question isn’t how you market. It’s whether you’re even chosen at all. And that decision is increasingly being made before your customer ever sees you.
