"That's what I needed to hear!" As a consultant, there is nothing better than hearing those words -- helping somebody get clear on a long-standing business problem, to cut through the haze and confusion of this hyper-competitive world, and provide hope. For more than 10 years, I've offered an opportunity for anyone to buy an hour of my time, and this is what I've learned: 1) You can get a lot done in one hour, and 2) I'm good at this. I've advised hundreds of people, and no one has ever been disappointed. I have never promoted this much, but it's very rewarding work, and if you think I can help with your personal brand and pressing marketing problems, click the link in the comments to learn more.

My friends are losing their marketing research jobs as companies opt for the AI Easy Button. But as we cut costs, we might be abdicating the future of our companies. Let's dive into why the heart of your existence might depend on a non-AI approach to research.

The hottest app in the world is shocking and scaring AI experts. Is it alive? Is it the singularity? Should we be afraid of Moltbook?

Nearly every week, I receive a DM with an offer like, "Have you ever thought about writing a book?" If all you did was glance at my profile, you could tell I've written a book. I am weary of these lazy, automated approaches. First time you do it, your connection to me is removed. Treat me like a human being please. Put in at least minimal effort.

What does it mean to be human in an age when we’re never the most intelligent entity in the room ... ever again?  I am obsessed with this question. It might be the most profound question we've ever faced. Have you thought about this too? Do you have an answer?

AI has become my mentor. I know that sounds strange, but hear me out. I wrote a post this week noting that this question: "Who decides the safe limits of superintelligence?" could be a turning point in human history. As I wrote the draft of this post, I felt angry and even scared about the prospects of weaponizing AI, and this was apparent in the tone of the article. I uploaded the draft to Claude before I published and asked, "Is this post balanced? Did I miss anything?" Claude responded, "Mark, this is not you. Your thesis is emotional and under-developed. You are known for your fairness and intellectual honesty. Here are some ideas to make it better." And the ideas were pretty harsh ... and much appreciated. I generally work alone. In this case, AI wasn't just a muse or editor; it intervened as a wise friend, keeping me on brand. AI is helping me to be wiser, bolder, and more helpful in this world. How about you?

This week, I made a significant announcement. After nearly 13 years, I'm stepping aside as the host of The Marketing Companion podcast. Certainly this little show beat the odds, rising to the top of the "Best Of" lists and garnering 2.5 million downloads. Why now ... and what's next? This is a matter of perfect timing. I was ready to shed some business activities, and I found a new owner who will take this show to new heights, beginning in January. I am so proud of the show and the rabid fans who tune in. I am certain the future of The Marketing Companion is bright. You can hear more about this decision and meet the new host in today's episode > https://lnkd.in/eVpDB8Rh

There are four areas where human marketers will thrive in an era dominated by AI: 1. Brand communities. What is the AI role in a community? Nothing significant. We long to belong and connect to real humans. 2. Experiences. Bring people together to live your brand, to feel it, and experience it. An area ripe for innovation as young people put down their earbuds and rediscover the world. 3. Transcendant content. This is what I write about in my book "Audacious." This is the disruptive content that is the signal against the noise of the AI slop. Content that approaches the emotional level of art. 4. Personal brands. No matter what happens with AI, we will want to turn to a beloved, trusted human for insights, mentoring, and truth in a world of deepfakes. Your personal brand is the last line of defense against AI. Am I missing anything here? Any area that humans will dominate? Also, I have a few spots left in my upcoming personal branding master class. I think this is the best resource in the world if you're serious about finally getting serious about your personal brand > https://lnkd.in/eTc6qgFs

If you're looking for a last-minute gift or a GREAT read over the holidays, many of my books are now on sale at Amazon. Here is a selection guide: "How AI Changes Your Customers" is a short book that packs a wallop! Explore how humanity is being rewired before our eyes. We are in a world where AI is the decision-maker. AI is the customer. A must for marketers. "Audacious" is the most fun book I've ever written, a rollicking view of how humanity will survive and thrive in an AI-dominated world. Practical advice from the world's most innovative marketers. For creators who refuse to be ignored. "Marketing Rebellion" is my all-time bestselling book and an inspiring wake-up call for businesses still following a boring, obsolete playbook. Philip Kotler, the father of modern marketing, told me this is his favorite marketing book. "KNOWN" is a beloved book and my most important contribution to the business world. Building an effective personal brand is our last line of defense against AI. This book is the result of two years of research, and IT WORKS. "Cumulative Advantage" is sort of KNOWN Part 2. Once you build a brand, how do you create momentum for your ideas and your life? My most personal book. "Belonging to the Brand" boldly claims that community is the last great marketing strategy. And, I was right. LinkedIn called it "the seminal book on brand community." An essential read about marketing's next frontier. All of my books are thoroughly researched, fun, inspirational, and fluff-free. Thanks for supporting my work!

I am in marketing because of Philip Kotler, the father of modern marketing. In my university "Intro to Marketing" class, I opened Dr. Kotler's classic textbook (which I still have) and read his definition: "Marketing is a combination of psychology, anthropology, and sociology." Marketing ... is all things human. I was in! In 2023, I met Dr. Kotler for the first time over a Zoom call. He held up a copy of my book "Marketing Rebellion" and said, I want to show you my favorite marketing book. I nearly fell out of my chair. And then he invited me to visit him at his home. He continues to be a huge influence on me with his insistence that companies must adopt a more human voice, especially now in the AI Era. I was so honored that he read and reviewed my new book, "Audacious: How Humans Win in an AI Marketing World." He sent me a personal note calling me bold and courageous for writing it. What a great moment.

Headline in the U.S. this week: "White House releases AI doctored news photo ..." ... the rest doesn't matter. The topic doesn't matter. This isn't one of Trump's memes. It's an actual news photo. When the government knowingly and egregiously manipulates news photos to dupe the public and advance a political agenda, that crosses a line. I understand political hyperbole. Trump Theater is extreme, but it has always been around in some form. On both sides of the aisle, you need fact-checking during any speech or news conference. But there is a dividing line between political grandstanding and manipulating the actual news ... using AI to make other people say things or do things that are not true. We just cannot stand for that. This could be any of us, my friends. There is so much crap in the news that this item will quickly be buried, but it is critically important. You DO NOT EFF WITH THE NEWS. Our own government is telling us that they own us and can make us or break us with their own AI spin.

I've often said that working on your personal brand isn't a project. It's a lifestyle. Projects have an end point. A personal brand does not. This doesn't have to seem scary, but it does take work. And if you approach the effort with heart and tenacity, it will work. The subject of the "sustainable" personal brand is important. There are four areas where humans will thrive in an AI marketing world: Personal Brand, Experiences, transcendent content that approaches art, and brand communities. Of these, I believe brand communities are the most overlooked and hold the most potential. Did you know that about 80% of start-ups today begin with a brand community as their primary brand strategy? And 37% say the community is their number one success factor. Young people today get it. They're reaching beyond traditional ads to build real customer relationships and advocates. Unfortunately, larger companies are way behind this trend. Someone asked me what the role of AI will be in human online communities. Short of some admin tasks, I don't see one. We will go to communities for bot-free human connection. If you're evaluating a marketing role that can't be touched by AI, are you looking at brand communities?

Winding down Manila segment of my trip. What an amazing experience in the friendliest and most gracious of countries. First photo gives you a sense of the number of people in attendance for my two-hour talk on “New Marketing Realities.” First class event. Many people think this book is so valuable that they buy multiple copies as emergency backups! 😂 Seriously, this is a must-read for any business owner, marketer, and parent because it shows how human psychology is being re-wired by AI. There is no going back. We are changing ... how we think, how we connect, how we trust, how we buy -- even how we love. We're abdicating our human agency to machines, and it is happening right now. Yes, AI might be coming for our jobs. But it is also coming for our customers. "How Ai Changed Your Customers" is the only book that provides research-based evidence showing what's happening, and what to do about it.
