Galicia leads the path towards meningitis elimination with the world’s most comprehensive vaccination schedule
Today, the President of the Xunta de Galicia, Alfonso Rueda, announced the introduction of routine meningococcal B vaccination for adolescents aged 12 years — a measure that further consolidates what was already one of the most comprehensive meningitis vaccination schedules worldwide.
This strategic decision reinforces a public health model grounded in anticipation, scientific evidence, and long-term population protection. Galicia, a region historically affected with particular intensity by the devastating impact of meningococcal disease, has successfully reduced its incidence to minimal levels through sustained and pioneering vaccination policies.
The addition of this booster dose completes protection against the major meningococcal serogroups across the life course, fully aligning with the WHO Global Roadmap to Defeat Meningitis as a public health threat by 2030.
This step should not be interpreted solely in terms of current incidence, but rather as part of a forward-looking strategy aimed at consolidating past achievements and anticipating future epidemiological challenges.
Galicia continues to demonstrate that the combination of programmatic leadership, pragmatic public health, and applied science enables progress towards ambitious yet achievable goals:
