Most people treat great connections like accidents. They wait for the “right moment.” The “random introduction.” The “lucky break.” But strong networks aren’t built on luck — they’re built on intention. Reconnect with someone you’ve already met (with a real reason). Host a small dinner and bring two worlds together. Spend time in rooms where the people you admire already gather. Relationships compound but only if you create the moments. What’s one intentional encounter you can create this week? 👇

750 seconds. ⏱️ That’s it. Not a hustle. Not a grind. Just one message, one comment, one intro a day. Do that consistently and something wild happens: 👉 connections compound 👉 opportunities stack 👉 your network grows quietly in the background Big wins rarely come from big bursts. They come from small, daily moves done well. What’s your 750 seconds going to today? 💬✨

Go through 20-30 contacts and honestly ask: "Would I lend this person $20 if they asked?" Create three categories: Definite yes, definite maybe, definitely not. Step 2: Flip the test. "Would this person lend me $20?" Be brutally honest. This reveals where real trust exists. Step 3: Focus on two groups: People who passed both ways (highest value) People you'd like to pass the test (growth targets) For high value connections, meaningful outreach matters—not generic "checking in." Example: "Hey Sarah, just read this article about healthcare tech and thought of your new project. No need to respond—just wanted to share something useful." The $20 test cuts through networking theater to reveal genuine mutual trust. What percentage of your network passes the $20 test both ways?

Grateful to Matt Stone for a really enjoyable conversation on The Building Business Relationships Show! We sat down to talk about how AI is reshaping communication, why it’s getting harder to separate signal from noise, and what leaders can do to maintain trust as things scale. I always appreciate conversations that leave me thinking a bit longer after they end, this was one of those. Big thanks to Matt for having me on and for hosting a show that prioritizes depth over hype. The episode is live if you’d like to check it out: https://lnkd.in/e-GZqsue Matt’s also been putting together a strong run of episodes lately. Well worth browsing if this topic resonates:  https://lnkd.in/eEwmXnWj

Quick reminder: reaching out doesn’t need an agenda. A genuine “thank you” can rekindle years of connection.

The cool development: growth of micro communities. We're tired of mega groups—5,000 people on Facebook where nobody knows each other and everyone's shouting because there's no human connection. We're desiring authenticity. These micro groups become almost like coworkers idly bantering throughout the day. I have a fraternity group—20+ years of staying in touch. Sometimes months pass with no conversation; sometimes we share messages or memes 4-5 times daily. It doesn't require deep thought. It's passive connection maintenance. This shift from mega to micro communities reflects important relationship dynamics: Mega groups (5,000+ members): Anonymous participation Broadcast communication No genuine relationships Exhausting noise Micro communities (10-50 people): Known participants Conversational flow Real relationships Comfortable rhythm The coworker banter analogy is apt—sustained ambient connection without intensity demands. Memes and messages maintain relationship presence without requiring elaborate engagement. Micro communities provide what professional mega-networks cannot: genuine belonging through sustained, low-pressure interaction. What micro communities provide you with sustained connection?

few years ago, I kept trying to get in rooms with the “big names.” The people everyone wanted five minutes with. But the most meaningful relationships I’ve built? They weren’t with people at the top. They were with people on the way up. When you support someone before the spotlight finds them — make an intro, share an opportunity, encourage their work — you’re not networking for status. You’re building something real. And those relationships grow with you.

Sometimes reconnecting is as simple as finishing that sentence you never sent. 🌸 Your people are closer than you think.

I love hosting dinners. Once monthly, I gather 10 people I care about from different walks of life. This approach provides: - Opportunity to reconnect with valued relationships - Ability to demonstrate care by creating mini-community for one evening - Platform for them to meet other interesting people At the end of the day, we're trying to nurture rich, diverse, beautiful relationships of all sorts of different shapes and sizes. This format curated group dinners rather than sequential one-on-one meetings creates efficiency and serendipity simultaneously. Ten individual coffee meetings consume vastly more time while generating less relationship value than one thoughtfully composed dinner. The curation matters: bringing together people from different walks of life creates unexpected connections that homogeneous professional gatherings cannot. Your role as connector adds value beyond individual relationships. Monthly rhythm ensures consistency without overwhelm. Relationships compound when maintained through regular, memorable interactions rather than sporadic, transactional touchpoints. How do you create memorable group experiences that nurture multiple relationships simultaneously?

We've learned remarkably much in recent years with numerous tools now available to build and maintain deeper relationships. Consider Dr. Arthur Aron's 36 Question Study: researchers placed strangers together and guided them through 36 questions with gradually increasing vulnerability—from very basic inquiries to some of the deepest questions we ask. Result: they can build friendships. This demonstrates that connection isn't mysterious or purely intuitive—it follows observable patterns that can be systematically applied. The key insight: graduated vulnerability. Moving incrementally from safe topics to deeper sharing creates trust scaffolding that enables meaningful connection between strangers. We now have scientific frameworks for what previous generations approached through trial and error. The question becomes: are we applying this knowledge intentionally in our professional relationship building? Structured vulnerability progression isn't manipulation—it's understanding the mechanics of human connection and applying them thoughtfully. How do you incorporate structured vulnerability into your professional networking?

Are there significant decisions you're postponing? Consider this: at 90, I want to run around Disney World with great-grandchildren—not be confined to a lounge chair unable to move. Think about this daily: "What will benefit future me?" This reframe applies directly to professional relationship building. Maintaining relationships doesn't benefit you today—it benefits future you during career transitions, unexpected opportunities, or business challenges. Daily decisions optimizing for immediate comfort versus long-term benefit compound dramatically over time. Today's relationship investment becomes tomorrow's professional advantage. Every day, prioritize what future you will appreciate rather than what present you finds convenient. The lounge chair versus running around represents the cumulative effect of daily choices—in fitness, relationships, and professional development. What will your 90-year-old self wish you had prioritized today?

Most people try to “catch up” on their network once or twice a year. They open their contacts, feel overwhelmed, and close it again. A better approach is much simpler. Update one contact per day. Add a small note from your last conversation. Something personal you learned. A reminder for next time you speak. It takes less than a minute, but over time it creates a powerful advantage: Your memory of people stays fresh Conversations become more thoughtful Relationships deepen naturally Instead of scrambling every six months, your network stays organized all year long. Small systems create big relationship outcomes.

Networking tip you’ll actually want to try 🍽️✨ Host a Second-Degree Dinner. Find a co-host from a completely different circle, invite 4–6 people each, and bring everyone together around a table. The magic isn’t the size of the room—it’s the trusted introductions. No pitching. No forced small talk. Just real conversations that naturally turn into meaningful connections. The best networking happens when it doesn’t feel like networking at all.

Would you lend them $20? And would they lend you $20? If the answer is yes both ways, there’s real trust there. That’s someone to invest in, protect, and prioritize. If it’s one-sided, the relationship may just need more consistency and care. If it’s a mutual no, it might not belong in your active circle. Not every connection is equal. Strong networks aren’t built on volume — they’re built on mutual trust. Who passes your $20 test?

Heading to a conference next month. Rather than just "show me all my contacts," I asked Relatable to show me: → People in my Austin Sphere → Who are also Past Clients → Who I haven't spoken to since January That's not "scrolling through my contacts." That's a targeted follow-up list ready to go before I land. We just shipped precision filtering to Relatable — AND, NOT, and ALL logic across your Spheres, Topics, and Companies. Because the difference between a great network and a useful network is knowing how to find exactly the right person at exactly the right moment.
