Career Journey & Achievements
Ted Rubin’s career in digital marketing and relationship building spans nearly three decades of industry change. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Marketing from Cornell University between 1976 and 1980, laying the foundation for a career that would eventually move across traditional marketing, digital communication, social media, and strategic advisory work.
In 1997, Rubin began working alongside Seth Godin at Yoyodyne, a pioneering interactive direct marketing firm that was acquired by Yahoo! in the fourth quarter of 1998. The experience placed him close to the early development of digital marketing and helped shape his understanding of how businesses could build relationships through emerging digital channels.
In March 2009, Rubin introduced and began advocating for the concept of Return on Relationship (ROR, #RonR). The framework shifted attention away from purely transactional metrics toward the value created through sustained relationships. Starting in 2011, he served as Chief Social Marketing Officer at Collective Bias, where he played a significant role in content and influencer marketing. His leadership and community-building work contributed to the company’s growth before its acquisition by Inmar in 2016.
Rubin has also built a body of work around his approach to modern marketing. He released Return on Relationship in January 2013, followed by How to Look People in the Eye Digitally in March 2015. He later published The Age of Influence: Selling to the Digitally Connected Customer in May 2017 and co-authored Retail Relevancy with retail thought leader John Andrews in January 2022.
In September 2013, Rubin founded The Rubin Organization, expanding his work as a social marketing strategist, business advisor, and keynote speaker. His advisory work has since extended across several growth sectors. He joined Space back as an investor and advisor in April 2019, supporting technology connecting social engagement with programmatic display advertising. In January 2020, he joined the board of Evergreen Trading, where his work focused on brand awareness and relationship capital within corporate media trading. In September 2025, Rubin joined the advisory board of Larridin, focusing on artificial intelligence transformation, governance, and business productivity.
Content Strategy & Teaching Approach
Rubin’s content centers on a straightforward idea: brands should treat relationships as long-term business assets rather than short-term marketing outcomes. His approach combines relational authenticity, transparent communication, and practical business thinking.
A recurring theme in his work is “Straight Talk,” which encourages companies to listen more carefully to customers, employees, and communities instead of relying solely on promotional messaging. Through his LinkedIn content and speaking engagements, Rubin also highlights the value of frontline employee insights and open dialogue as sources of innovation.
He frequently challenges the assumption that increasing discounts is always the best way to stimulate growth. His perspective is that excessive reliance on promotions can weaken perceived brand value and make it harder to build lasting customer loyalty. Instead, he encourages businesses to strengthen trust and create meaningful interactions across digital touchpoints.

Why He Matters?
Ted Rubin’s work offers a useful perspective on what makes digital brands sustainable. Rather than treating engagement as a series of isolated interactions, he encourages businesses to think about the trust and loyalty accumulated through consistent communication.
His Return on Relationship framework remains relevant as companies navigate increasingly automated digital experiences. Rubin’s message is that technology can expand reach, but genuine relationships are what give that reach lasting value. For businesses focused on sustainable growth, protecting brand trust and creating meaningful connections can be just as important as driving immediate conversions.
