Some LinkedIn posts feel dead on arrival. Others sit among the crickets for hours… then suddenly take off. And often, smaller accounts outperform the ones with 100k followers. For years, most advice about growing on LinkedIn has focused on tactics like the best time to post and commenting before publishing. But those tactics assume your post was actually selected for distribution. After reading Christopher Penn's recent analysis of LinkedIn’s engineering research, I learned the system may actually work in two stages: 1) Retrieval: deciding whether your post should even be considered for someone’s feed 2) Ranking: deciding where it appears once it gets there If your content never enters the candidate pool during retrieval, the ranking system never even gets the chance to evaluate it. That has a big implication for marketers: The goal isn’t so much learning the algorithm. It’s becoming so clear, consistent, and engaged with the right audience that the algorithm learns you. I wrote a deeper breakdown (plus, I made a fancy diagram of how this might work) on the SparkToro blog: https://lnkd.in/ghZRNxAf
