The counter-intuitive way to strengthen your brand? Build personas that make you disappear as the hero 🏰 I know, it sounds backwards. Isn’t branding supposed to highlight what makes us special? Our "founder story," our "vision," our "magic"? Beneath the surface, here’s what’s really happening: In your customer’s mind, your brand is never the protagonist. They are. You’re the mentor. The guide. The shortcut. 📙 In #BrandPsychology, I describe personas as living reflections of real, self-realizing human beings—people in search of solutions, progress, belonging. Not an audience for your spotlight. When we build brand personas rooted in empathy, not ego, everything shifts: - Messaging becomes sharper because it's no longer about “convincing.” - Content becomes richer because it's grounded in shared hopes. - Loyalty deepens because people feel seen, not targeted. Your product might solve a need, but your brand should honor a story already unfolding inside them. 👉 So next time you build a persona, ask yourself: Are we describing a buyer we want to impress? Or a human being we’re ready to serve? Your customer isn’t looking for another hero. They’re looking for a sidekick in their own journey. And that, to me, is branding at its most powerful.

The first time I ran into Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's work on Flow, I was heads-down on creativity research for my SCAD graduate thesis. Was it really possible to overcome the anxieties of modern life and let ourselves go in the mystique of creative flow? I was hooked. Until now, I had always wondered how these supremely empowering moments could be part of, well, “business as usual”. Part of what, I believed, could be meaningful work. That question has now been answered — masterfully. This is business as unusual.

As long as it’s human beings breathing life into brands, affinity makes a difference. Passion, or lack thereof, matters. Caring shows. Brands, after all, are cultural artifacts. These symbols we design and redesign over time carry a part of ourselves: our beliefs, our ideals, our hopes. When disengaged, they carry nothing. David Ogilvy knew this well: “At breakfast, I drink Maxwell House coffee or Tetley Tea, and eat two slices of Pepperidge Farm toast. I wash with Dove, deodorize with Ban, and light my pipes with a Zippo lighter. And why not, pray tell? Are these not the finest goods and services on Earth? I think they are and that is why I advertise them.” — Are these not the finest goods and services on Earth? I think they are, and that’s why I brand them ✨
